Position Information: We’re hiring a Maintenance Section Assistant for our E-Way Maintenance Section in the Amarillo District. Step into a key leadership role, helping oversee roadway maintenance operations that keep the traveling public safe. In this position, you’ll support the Maintenance Section Supervisor by coordinating crews, providing day-to-day guidance, and ensuring work is completed efficiently across a designated service area. Ideal candidates are strong leaders who can work independently, respond to emergency situations when needed, and serve as a trusted resource for maintenance staff while making a meaningful impact on their community.

Assists a Maintenance Section Assistant in supporting the Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing work completed by the crews and contractors, which provides a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Leads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Education

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education

Experience

6 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction related work (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licences and Certifications

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Extensive knowledge of
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Considerable knowledge of
  • Incident management procedures
  • Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical. -
