Job summary

The Washington State Patrol in Tumwater, WA is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician to maintain and certify static and portable truck scales across the state. You may oversee contractors and work with other trades, including carpentry and electrical, to ensure facilities meet standards.

The role requires a valid WA driver's license, ability to lift 75 lbs, and eventually obtaining a Class A CDL and scale certification within 2 years. Travel is statewide with overnight stays as needed.

Qualifications

  • Valid WA State Driver’s License (or obtain within 30 days).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Able to interpret drawings/blueprints and use hand/power tools.
  • One of the following: 4+ years in building trades (HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical, locksmith/security); Certified welder with 4+ years’ experience; 2+ years in scale installation/repair/certification.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong customer service and teamwork skills.
  • Physically able to lift 75 lbs, climb ladders, and work extended shifts.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL and scale certification within 2 years (training provided).
  • Self‑motivated and safety‑conscious with problem‑solving skills.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment polygraph examination and background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Providing oversight of maintenance personnel, repair, and modification of plant machinery and mechanical equipment, special apparatus, utilities, fabrication and maintenance of scales, and maintenance of facilities.
  • Directs journey-level trade workers and others engaged in maintenance, repair, and modifications to building equipment, machinery, power plants, and heavy equipment.
  • Reads plans and blueprints, inspects projects to ensure compliance with local codes and WSP regulations. Determines scope of work, materials needed, and cost estimates.
  • This position provides input to planning staff regarding scope of future projects. Consults with the construction staff for direction on installation details. May direct construction crews on site.
  • Provides facility support as requested by supervisor.

Job description

The position is located in Tumwater, WA. The employee in this position would be required to work throughout the state which also requires overnight stays during the scheduled work week. Roughly 42 work weeks of the year.

The Facilities Management Section is responsible for maintaining all the facilities which are used to support the core mission of the Washington State Patrol. This position provides facility maintenance at district headquarters, detachment offices, truck weigh stations, radio communication sites, Shelton training academy, fire training academy, truck scales, drug scales, and other agency portable truck scales.

About the Position

This employee represents the Property Management Division and the Washington State Patrol; and will provide professional customer service to customers, vendors, contractors, peers, and employees. This employee works as a team to maintain, repair, and certify static and portable truck scales. This employee may oversee work performed by Vendors or Sub-Contractors on Agency equipment and facilities. This employee works alone or with other trades staff consisting of painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and other construction trades.

Work Environment & Hazards
  • Operate scale test truck (Class B CDL) and tractor/trailer (Class A CDL).
  • Outdoor tasks include ladder work, welding, confined spaces, heavy lifting.
  • Indoor tasks include electrical calibration and high/low voltage testing.
  • Exposure to weather, traffic, electrical risks, air quality concerns, and heavy equipment.
Travel
  • Overnight, statewide travel required approx. 42 weeks/year.
Required Qualifications
