University of the District of Columbia is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic (Locksmith) to perform skilled locksmith, mechanical, and general maintenance work in support of the university’s facilities and physical plant operations. Brief Description of Duties:

The Maintenance Mechanic (Locksmith) performs skilled locksmith, mechanical, and general maintenance work in support of the University's facilities and physical plant operations. The position is responsible for installing, repairing, maintaining, and replacing locks, keys, door hardware, and security devices while performing preventive and corrective maintenance on building systems and equipment. The incumbent helps ensure the security, functionality, and reliability of University facilities through responsive maintenance services, regulatory compliance, and quality workmanship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. 1. Locksmith Services & Door Hardware Maintenance

   Performs skilled locksmith work involving the installation, repair, maintenance, adjustment, and replacement of locks, locksets, cylinders, cores, panic hardware, door closers, hinges, and associated door hardware.

   Repairs and opens locks; originates, duplicates, and cuts keys using key-cutting equipment; changes lock combinations; rekeys cylinders; and disassembles locks to repair or replace worn tumblers, springs, pins, and other internal components.

   Maintains keying systems, lock inventories, key records, and hardware documentation while supporting campus access control and physical security requirements.

   Diagnoses door and hardware issues and recommends repairs or replacements to ensure safe and secure operation.

2. 2. Preventive & Corrective Building Maintenance

   Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and related building systems.

   Inspects, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electrical equipment, lighting systems, switches, outlets, appliances, pumps, valves, fans, window air-conditioning units, Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, generators, exhaust fans, and associated building equipment.

   Performs filter replacements, lubrication, cleaning, minor mechanical repairs, and scheduled preventive maintenance activities to maximize equipment reliability and reduce downtime.

   Maintains accurate maintenance records documenting completed work, labor, and materials utilized.

3. 3. Mechanical Repairs & Equipment Installation

   Installs, repairs, and modifies building fixtures, piping systems, mechanical components, electrical devices, and related facility equipment.

   Assists with installation of new equipment, electrical connections, and minor system modifications.

   Operates power tools, shop equipment, pipe threading equipment, saws, drills, sanders, lathes, and other maintenance equipment safely and effectively.

   Performs glazing, painting, and miscellaneous maintenance tasks as assigned to support departmental operations.

4. 4. Inspection, Troubleshooting & Safety Compliance

   Inspects building systems and facilities to identify maintenance deficiencies, equipment failures, and safety hazards.

   Troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and locksmith-related issues using established maintenance procedures and technical knowledge.

   Ensures work complies with applicable OSHA safety standards, University policies, building codes, and industry best practices.

   Maintains safe work areas and properly utilizes required personal protective equipment (PPE).

5. 5. Customer Service, Work Order Management & Other Duties

   Responds to maintenance service requests in a timely and professional manner while maintaining effective communication with faculty, staff, students, contractors, and supervisors.

   Completes assigned work orders using the University's maintenance management system and accurately documents labor, materials, and completed work.

   Supports emergency maintenance response activities and assists with after-hours maintenance needs when required.

6. 6. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements
