The UM04 University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is hiring a full-time locksmith to install, repair, and maintain locks and locking systems on campus facilities.

Job description

Overview

The Physical Plant Department is hiring a full‑time, non‑exempt locksmith to install, repair and maintain locks, keys, locking systems and door closures on campus facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, rebuild and open mechanical and electronic locks, locking systems, door closures and locking devices.
  • Cut new or duplicate keys using key cutting machines according to specifications.
  • Disassemble locks, replace worn tumblers, springs and other parts, and insert new or repaired tumblers to change combinations.
  • Maintain automated and manual records, file key codes, and ensure campus lock safety and security.
  • Prepare departmental reports as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in the locksmith trade.
  • Valid non‑commercial Class C driver’s license in the State of Maryland.
  • Availability for emergencies on an as‑needed basis.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of lock repair, maintenance and installation techniques.
  • Proficiency in basic mathematics (area, volume, weights, fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions).
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of locksmith tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, prepare summaries and reports, and maintain key records.
  • Capacity to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment; ability to work at heights up to 35 feet; manipulation of heavy equipment up to 70 lbs.
  • Capability to concurrently operate multiple controls on equipment and machinery.
  • Comfortable working in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather conditions.
Physical Demands
  • May be required to bend, stoop, reach, carry, and lift frequently; handle heavy equipment.
  • May be required to work in adverse weather or perform in hazardous environments.
  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment and operate office equipment.
