The State of North Carolina is seeking skilled maintenance professionals for the Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution. This full-time position requires expertise in multiple trades, including electrical and plumbing. Candidates must pass a background check and document relevant experience. A sign-on bonus of $7,000 is available for eligible applicants.

To be eligible for a sign-on bonus, the candidate must not have worked as a probationary, permanent, or time-limited employee in the last 12 months as an employee subject to the State Human Resources Act.
This position is located at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution in Avery County, NC.
Positions perform skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of buildings and facilities. Work requires specialization in two or more technical trades related to maintenance of facilities, equipment, and machinery. Positions function at the journey level in trades such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating and air, or similar. Work assignments are complex, requiring planning and coordination across multiple trades. Positions operate with limited oversight, seeking input from higher-level trades specialists for novel problems. They work independently but may refer unusual issues to supervisors. They provide technical guidance to other maintenance staff and ensure work adheres to standards.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply even if the salary grade is the same or lower than their current position. If selected, a new salary will be calculated based on relevant education, experience, funding, and internal equity, which may result in a pay increase.
***As of January 1, 2025, there are new salary adjustments approved by the State Human Resources Commission, with a range of $39,671.00 – $69,426.00.***

High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of progressive experience in the trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. May require current EPA certification as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician, as per federal regulations.
