Job summary

Harris County is seeking a Building Engineer to install, repair, and maintain equipment and facilities as part of a dedicated facilities team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Three years of hands-on experience in building engineering operations and maintenance of commercial/industrial facilities.
• Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test; safety-sensitive role with random screening.
• Valid Texas driver's license and a good driving record.

Responsibilities

• Performs building repairs (cosmetic and structural) and maintenance of machinery, electrical wiring, water and wastewater systems, plumbing, and structural components per instructions, blueprints, manuals, and codes.
• Applies advanced skills to adapt procedures, tools, and materials to meet special needs.
• Resolves most questions and problems.
• May drive a personal or county vehicle to various work sites.
• Assists and trains less experienced co-workers and performs other duties as assigned.

Job Duties:

• Performs duties and tasks that are frequently non-routine, involving building repairs both cosmetic and structural, repair and maintenance of machinery, electrical wiring and fixtures, water and wastewater systems, plumbing, and physical structure in accordance with instructions, blueprints, manuals, and all building codes.
• May apply advanced skills in area of specialization, adapting procedures, techniques, tools, materials and/or equipment to meet special needs.

Requirements:

Education:

Experience:

• Three (3) years of hands-on experience in various aspects of building engineering operations, repairs, and maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities such as air handlers, pumps, boilers, chillers, and motors.
  

Knowledge, Skill & Abilities (KSAs):

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in a thorough, neat, and timely manner.
• Skilled in the care and use of hand tools and power equipment used in maintenance engineering trades.
• Must display mechanical aptitude.
• Good understanding of equipment and ductwork installation.
• Self-starter possessing the interpersonal skills required to be a productive team player.
• Ability to maintain a courteous, helpful behavior at all times.
• Must be able to pass a security check and drug test, as required. This position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug and alcohol screening.
• May be required to obtain a license in the assigned area.
• Valid driver's license (Texas upon hire) and a good driving record.
  

Emergency Deployment & Continuity Of Operations Requirement:

In accordance with Harris County’s Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) Policy, this position is subject to emergency response and deployment protocols. The employee may be designated as supporting a Mission Essential Function (MEF) and must:

• Participate in the classification process of departmental staff based on MEF responsibilities.
• Be available for temporary deployment to an alternative work location, role, or telework assignment during emergency events.
• Confirm work assignments with their supervisor prior to reporting to any worksite during such events.
• Remain flexible in assuming alternative duties as directed to support County operations continuity.
