Job summary

Harris County is seeking a skilled Building Engineer/Facilities Technician to install, operate, maintain, and repair machinery and systems across county facilities. The position may require driving to multiple sites and stepping in for the supervisor when needed.

Candidate should have five years of hands-on building operations experience, plus one year with Microsoft Office tools. A Stationary Engineer license (3rd grade or higher) is preferred.

  • Thorough understanding of operating and maintaining building systems.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions precisely.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and transportability to multiple sites.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, repair, and maintain machinery and systems in Harris County facilities per guidelines.
  • May drive to various work sites; may act as supervisor in the supervisor's absence and train colleagues.
  • Be on call after hours as required and perform assigned duties.
  • Comply with CJIS background checks and safety requirements.

Job description

Position Overview

Responsible for the installation, maintenance, operation, and repair of machinery, equipment, and systems as required to maintain functioning building(s).

Job Duties
  • Performs all duties required to operate, repair, and maintain machinery, equipment, and systems in Harris County facilities within City, County, and State guidelines.
  • May be required to drive a personal or county vehicle to various work sites. Assumes the supervisor's duties when the supervisor is absent, trains less experienced co-workers, and performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to be on call after hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Experience
  • Five (5) years of hands-on experience in various aspects of building engineering operations and contract management relating to the repair, maintenance, and operation of commercial and/or industrial facilities.
  • One year of experience with computer programs such as the Microsoft Office suite, spreadsheets, and database applications.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions in a thorough, neat, and timely manner and display mechanical aptitude.
  • Valid Texas driver's License.
  • Skilled in the care and use of hand tools and power equipment used in maintenance engineering trades.
  • Maintain a courteous, helpful behavior at all times.
  • Self-starter possessing the interpersonal skills required to be a productive team player.
  • Ability to receive CJIS clearance, pass a security check, and a drug test, as required. This position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug and alcohol screening.
  • Required to obtain a license in the assigned area.

Automatic Disqualification
  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for any Felony, and any Class A Misdemeanor
  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for a Class B Misdemeanor, if within the previous 10 years
  • Open arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor)
  • Family Violence conviction

General Information

Full-Time | Regular | 40 hours per week.

Subject to early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays at times, depending upon the project or workload.

Salary

Commensurate experience, based on 26 pay periods.

Physical Demands and Environmental Exposure

May work outside in all kinds of weather; may work with no air conditioning or heating, will work on ladders and scaffolding; duties require standing, sitting, stretching, bending, stooping, climbing, frequent lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. of equipment, supplies, and tools, and must have the ability to safely install rigging/lifting devices for heavier items. Will work in cramped and awkward positions with all types of mechanical tools, electric and other equipment, and may be exposed to dust, dirt, paint fumes, etc.
