Job summary

The U.S. Government seeks a skilled Wood Worker at Edwards AFB to plan, lay out, and perform construction, installation, and repair of wood and wood substitute structures, with close tolerance and structural soundness, including roofing work from tearing off to weatherproofing.

Responsibilities cover following blueprints, applying advanced shop mathematics, and maintaining safety practices; you will build frames, walls, trim, stairs, and support structures, using a range of tools and equipment

Qualifications

  • OPM X-118C qualifications for WG-4600 Wood Work.
  • Quality of experience emphasized over time length.
  • Screen-out element: ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lay out work from blueprints and drawings for wood work and roofing.
  • Maintain, repair, and weatherproof roofs and exterior structures.
  • Perform masonry-like tasks on interior/exterior surfaces as needed.
  • Construct, modify, and install wood frames, walls, and trim to spec.
  • Follow safety rules and keep a safe, clean work environment.

Job description

The primary purpose of this position is to provide full performance level work in constructing, installing, repairing, modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness, performing the full range of roofing repair to include, tearing-off old roofing, sheathing, shingling, truss work and leak detection.

Major Duties
  • Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in the construction and maintenance of installation facilities. Performs work involved in the maintenance, installation, repair, and weatherproofing of roof. Following clear-cut work orders and instructions from supervisors or higher-grade worker, performs masonry task involved in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of interior and exterior surfaces and structures. Independently applies skilled methods, techniques, and advanced shop mathematics to construct, install, repair, and modify a wide variety of structures. Works on projects, such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and other miscellaneous items. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and maintains tools.

  • Selectee may be exposed to toxic paints, chemicals, or other hazards and may require occupational health examinations.
  • A Physical Examination is required
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for WG-4600 Wood Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue‑collo w positions, you must meet any screen‑out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (other than blueprints)
  • Knowledge of Materials
  • Dexterity and Safety

Good physical stamina and strength to stand, bend, lift, and carry heavy and bulky items. Excellent time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines. Knowledge of safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
