Job description

Job Summary
Maintenance Mechanics working within the Merit System inspect, perform routine maintenance, and repair cars and light trucks, heavy trucks, heavy equipment, and other equipment such as lawnmowers, weed eaters, chain saws, and generators. Employees in this job class are expected to fabricate parts, perform bodywork, and may even construct pieces of equipment to perfect repairs on rolling stock or other equipment. Parts and equipment are typically fabricated through machining, cutting, and welding of steel and other metals. Maintenance Mechanics may also recreate broken parts, create parts for rolling stock, tools, or small structures for municipal buildings. Work is performed according to department guidelines and is reviewed by supervisors and/or superintendents.

Minimum Qualifications
Required qualifications include a Driver's License (CDL may be required within 90 days), experience or certification in welding ¼-inch steel, using a torch for metal cutting, fabricating parts with metals, and troubleshooting hydraulic systems.

Preferred Qualifications
A Class B Commercial Driver's License and experience in troubleshooting electrical systems are desirable.

Typical Job Duties
Perform minor bodywork, maintain hydraulic and other systems, inspect equipment, fabricate parts, perform preventive maintenance, and repair various vehicles and equipment. Also, maintain buildings, grounds, and small engines, and perform tire repairs.

Physical Demands
Requires significant physical exertion, including lifting up to 50 lbs, and the ability to read small numbers on meters.

Work Environment
Primarily in workshop settings with exposure to tools, chemicals, extreme temperatures, and mechanical hazards. Work may involve cramped spaces and exposure to dust, gasoline, and loud noises.
