Personnel Board of Jefferson County
Automotive Technicians working with Heavy Trucks are responsible for performing journeyman-level tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy-duty trucks, garbage packers, and other standard and specialized gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. Incumbents are expected to inspect equipment to determine the need for maintenance and/or repair work. Supervisors provide guidance, and technicians may also assist less experienced employees. Work is carried out under supervisor direction with independent judgment regarding repair methods. Tasks are reviewed for technical conformance and consistency with practice and policy.

Job involves significant and concerted physical exertion required for regular prolonged periods of carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or walking. Involves lifting items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Work involves the ability to read small numbers and letters on meters.
Work is performed primarily in employer-owned facilities such as workshops and involves the use of electrical, gas, or air powered tools and equipment such as metal cutters, welding equipment, and pneumatic wrenches. Work may be conducted in cramped spaces requiring extended periods in contorted body positions and exposure to contaminants such as dust, gasoline, and/or caustic chemicals, and to potential mechanical and moving vehicle hazards. Exposure to extreme temperatures (hot and cold), uneven, cluttered, and slippery surfaces, high vibration and loud noise (e.g. industrial and repair equipment).
