Position Mechanic/Welder - Heavy Fleet
JOB SUMMARY

The position involves performing a variety of semiskilled and skilled work in maintaining vehicles and equipment, maintenance and construction work, and operating a variety of heavy equipment in the maintenance and construction of roadways, storm drainage and other public works facilities and systems.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Evaluates vehicles and equipment for repair, preventive maintenance, and servicing.
  • Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments, hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
  • Inspects, repairs and services vehicles and equipment.
  • Cuts and welds various metals.
  • Evaluates safety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Determines purchases for parts and supplies.
  • Cuts and welds various metals.
  • Operates heavy equipment of various sizes and types including loader, backhoe, grader, oil distributor, hilift, etc.
  • Operates dump and other trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various materials or equipment.
  • Operates dump truck with a snowplow and salt/cinder spreader in the removal of ice and snow.
  • Operates trucks pulling a float or other equipment.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance records, phone bids, inventory, parts, materials hauled, work performed, job location, hours worked, etc.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement patching, ditch digging, shoveling, jack hammering, chain sawing, and other physical labor necessary.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
  • Operates light and medium sized construction and power equipment, such as air compressor, brush chipper, brush hog, chain saw, jackhammer, or mechanized broom.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the training of new or lower level employees to increase their skills and promote safety in the maintenance and construction of roads and storm drainage facilities.
  • Places traffic control devices and performs duties as flagger for work zone traffic control in compliance with the County’s standards and guidelines.
  • Performs some work as part of the County’s Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
  • Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.
Position Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in the maintenance of vehicles, machinery and heavy equipment;
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with automotive diagnostic software, preferred;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid State Class B Commercial Driver's License with no restrictions except corrective lens and intrastate. Class A Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) certifications from vehicle/equipment manufacturers for the repair of vehicles and equipment is preferred.
Special Requirements:
  • Work schedule is many times determined by weather conditions; work days can be long and strenuous without scheduled days off for extended periods; starting times are varied and cannot be set by employee.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  • Skill in the operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work whenever necessary.
  • Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate repairs, construction, and maintenance activities in a manner conducive to productivity and morale.
  • Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects and equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy and requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The work also requires mental and visual acuity, speaking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling; picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand; grasping; picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand; hearing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside-weather conditions, which may be extreme. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
