Job Summary
The Maintenance Manager is responsible for assuring that the facility and production equipment are properly maintained and designed to safely perform specified tasks in a cost‑effective manner. The role requires working hours from 7 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday with "On Call" 24‑hour availability, and may include overtime and variable shifts. Travel for training or plant observations may be necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Identification, justification, and execution of capital projects.
- Monitoring machine functioning, including repair/downtime history, and planning and executing preventive maintenance activities.
- Maintaining stock room inventory to reflect parts needs in a cost‑effective manner.
- Direct supervision of professional engineers, technicians, department supervisors, and clerical personnel; indirect supervision of hourly maintenance craftsmen (electricians, millwrights) and maintenance contractors onsite.
- Maintaining the physical facility to serve its intended use safely and cost‑effectively, ensuring equipment meets regulatory safety requirements (e.g., Cal/OSHA, NFPA) and monitoring discharges to keep permits in force and emissions within limits.
- Interface with other plant departments to identify, justify, and execute projects that improve safety, reduce manufacturing costs, and enhance production and repair of equipment breakdowns.
- Co‑ordinate with company groups (e.g., R & D, Central Engineering) to complete projects targeting productivity improvements.
- Develop departmental budget needs, justify expenditures, and maintain costs within budget.
- Coordinate project activity, including equipment design and introduction, with project engineers and plant SES (Safety, Environment & Security Supervisor), waste management, pollution control, and administrative requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Prior experience in maintenance areas such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and boiler.
- Knowledge of measuring gauges (tape measures, calipers).
- Prior forklift and scissor lift operation experience.
- Basic computer skills including MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel).
- Experience with an ERP system such as SAP and Ladder Logic preferred.
- Effective written and oral communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to read blueprints, equipment manuals, and schematics.
- Experience implementing and maintaining preventive maintenance and work order schedules.
- Ability to work under pressure and complete assigned tasks in stressful conditions.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Natural Science (Physics), Engineering, Business Management, Finance, Marketing, or Accounting.
- Five to seven (5‑7) years of progressively responsible experience in a manufacturing engineering and maintenance environment.
- Two to four (2‑4) years of experience in maintenance leadership.
- Background in the chemical industry or similar industrial experience.
Working Conditions
- Fast‑paced manufacturing environment with exposure to ambient and outside temperatures, dust, mechanical parts, pinch points, and increased noise levels.
- Exposure to hazardous mechanical, electrical, and chemical substances or equipment.
- Required work in confined spaces.
Physical Requirements
- Lifting or carrying: 1‑10 lbs, 11‑20 lbs, 21‑40 lbs, 41‑50 lbs, 51 lbs or more.
- Pushing or pulling: 1‑40 lbs, 41‑50 lbs, 51 lbs or more.
- Bending or stooping.
- Reaching above shoulder level.
- Driving automatic equipment vehicles.
- Operating machinery or power tools.
- Climbing (ladders, stairs, etc.).
- Walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods.
- Working in extreme temperatures.
- Repetitive motion, including wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Vision, hearing, and dexterity requirements typical of maintenance work.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Used
- Eye and hearing protection required at all times on the production line.
- Safety toe shoes (steel/composite).
- Flame‑resistant maintenance uniform.
- Other PPE as defined by management within assigned duties.
