MAINTENANCE LEAD TECHNICIAN
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor or Manager, the Maintenance Lead Technician plays a key leadership role in ensuring all equipment repairs and maintenance are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies and regulatory standards. This position oversees a team of technicians and provides hands-on support and expertise for complex diagnostics and repairs on diesel and non-diesel trucks and equipment, including hydraulic, electrical, HVAC, and chassis systems. The Lead Technician is also responsible for assigning and scheduling repair work, inspecting vendor repairs for quality assurance, and mentoring less experienced technicians. The goal is to minimize downtime, improve shop productivity, and uphold the highest safety and performance standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
•Perform welding and fabrication for line maintenance needs.
•Lead and direct the daily work of assigned technicians to ensure safe, timely, and efficient repairs.
•Plan and schedule maintenance activities to reduce equipment downtime.
•Diagnose complex mechanical and electronic issues using diagnostic tools.
•Review and inspect repairs completed by third-party vendors to ensure quality and compliance.
•Step in for Maintenance Supervisor responsibilities when needed.
•Mentor and coach technicians on diagnostic and repair techniques.
•Complete required company training programs and certifications.
•Perform other duties as assigned.
Maintain expert-level knowledge and advanced skills in the diagnosis and repair of:
•Chassis components
•Hydraulic, electrical, and control systems on refuse bodies
•Air and hydraulic braking systems
•Engine systems
•Suspension, drivetrain, and steering systems
•Heating and air conditioning systems
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
•Minimum of 3 year of experience on heavy equipment and truck maintenance experience
•Minimum of 4 year of experience in a technician position demonstrating knowledge of bothgasoline and diesel powered equipment diagnosis and repair.
•Strong ability to independently inspect and repair systems on heavy trucks, including: Suspension, steering, brakes, engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electrical, drivetrain, diesel emissions
•Experience with OSHA regulations (HazCom, Lockout/Tagout, fire protection)
•Supervisory or lead technician experience (1+ year)
•ASE Heavy Truck Certifications (T1–T8)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
•Prolonged periods of standing and walking
•Ability to climb, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces
•Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 75-100 pounds
•Exposure to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.)often
•Exposure to physical environment which involves moving mechanical parts, fumes fumes, dirt,odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements often
EDUCATION
•High school diploma or equivalent
•Graduate from an accredited automotive college or technical school is a plus
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
•Valid Driver’s License
•Commercial Driver’s License is a plus but not required
•Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (T1-T8) are a plus but not required
