The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) District 7 (Howard County) is recruiting for a Maintenance Contract Inspector (Transportation Engineering Technician IV). This position is open to applicants who meet the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or similar roles. Reapplication is necessary for future recruitment.

Nature of Work:

This role involves inspecting and providing technical direction for maintenance and construction projects, overseeing force accounts, and supporting engineering tasks. It is a senior technical or supervisory position, offering guidance to less experienced staff and potentially supervising projects, crews, or units. Work is performed under the supervision of an engineer, surveyor, or senior technical staff.

SHA has been recognized with the Training Magazine’s Training APEX Awards for five consecutive years.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • Experience: At least five (5) years of experience in technical engineering work related to design, traffic, construction, materials testing, surveys, maintenance, or planning.
  • Selective Qualifications: 1.5 years of the required experience must involve maintenance and/or construction inspection.

Note: Education in civil engineering or related fields from an accredited institution can substitute for experience at a rate of 30 semester credits per year, up to three years. An associate’s degree in engineering, construction management, surveying, or related technology counts as two years of experience. Candidates must hold and maintain a valid Maryland driver’s license.

Special Requirements:
  • On-call 24/7 for emergencies; considered essential personnel.
  • Must respond within one hour during emergencies.
  • Six-month probation, with possible extension.
