Description of Work
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for aMaintenance/ Construction Technician III at the North Carolina School for the Deaf located in beautiful Morganton, NC.
The primary purpose of this position is to perform skilled work in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of buildings and facilities. Work requires specialization in two or more technical trades in connection with maintenance of facilities, related equipment, and machinery. Positions function in multiple skilled trades such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating and air, or similar specializations. Work assignments are complex and require planning and coordination of multiple trade disciplines. Positions function with limited oversight and seek input from higher level trades specialists in the completion of novel maintenance problems and issues. Work is performed independently; however, positions may refer unusual work problems to their supervisor for consideration and final determination. Positions provide technical guidance to other positions engaged in skilled, semiskilled, or unskilled maintenance work. Positions ensure that work performed adheres to established maintenance, repair and/or construction standards.

North Carolina School for the Deaf is a residential school that provides elementary, middle and high school programs for students between the ages of 3 (three) and 22 (twenty-two) for deaf students from 46 of North Carolina's 100 counties. These students are from varying backgrounds and many have multiple handicaps. North Carolina School for the Deaf (NCSD) operates on a regular academic year, Sunday afternoon through Friday at 5:00pm. Support services and administration operate year-round.
As a part of the NC Department of Public Instruction's Education Services for the Deaf and Bind; the mission is to provide individualized comprehensive educational, vocational, and residential programs for the deaf and hard of hearing students leading to productive, independent, and successful lives. The North Carolina School for the Deaf is one of two schools for the deaf in North Carolina that provides an appropriate environment in which a hearing-impaired child can develop to his/her maximum potential in all areas: academic, vocational, communication, social, emotional, and Independent Living skills. NCSD serves students Pre-K–12th grade.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants must document on the application that they possessALLof the following:
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
- Skill in the use of tools required in various technically complex trades.
- Understand and work from sketches or penciled drawings.
- Experience operating the more common types of plumbing shop or steam plant equipment.
- Proficient with guiding the work of skilled workers.
- Ability to read and interpret building codes/blueprints.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
Additional Expectations Of The Position
The applicant does not need to have sign language skills at hire but will be required to demonstrate progressive sign language acquisition and participate in sign language classes offered at NCSD
Management Preferences
The position requires thorough knowledge of & skill in the plumbing trade in order to install new plumbing, repair plumbing equipment and maintain facilities equipment. This position also requires considerable knowledge of boiler operation procedures in order to operate steam plant & related mechanical equipment.
This position maintains all campus water supply and sanitary waste systems in addition to operation of the steam plant and related mechanical equipment with the assistance and cooperation of other skilled trades personnel, reads gauges, checks equipment for proper functioning & maintains logs. May provide work direction and training in the repair, maintenance & operation of boiler & related mechanical equipment and plumbing work. Makes rounds of reading gauges, adjusting equipment and observing operation of equipment; starts, stops and changeovers of generating equipment as needed. Keeps logs, recording gauge readings; performs chemistry checks (i.e. titrate samples, PH levels, alkalinity, conductivity, phospate levels, etc.), maintains inventory of parts and supplies; performs maintenance of area around boiler.
May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

- High school or General Educational Development (GED) diplomaand two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas;
