Job summary

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Maintenance Assistant, Carpenter to perform semiskilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of structures and related items. Incumbents may work with wood, sheet metal, plastics, or aluminum as needed.

Responsibilities include reading blueprints, using carpenter tools, repairing doors/windows, installing glass, building shelves, and assisting skilled tradespersons in renovations and constructions.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of carpentry basics and hand/power tools.
• Ability to read blueprints or drawings.
• Wamiliarity with building materials and carpentry trades.

Responsibilities

• Work from blueprints to perform semiskilled carpentry maintenance, repair and construction.
• Repair structural woodwork and equipment (doors, window sash, locks, hinges).
• Install glass in windows, doors and partitions.
• Build/repair/install bookcases, shelving, tables and racks using woodworking machines.
• Assist skilled tradespersons in erection or renovation of buildings and roofs.
• Build forms for concrete work.
• Erect/move wall partitions.
• Install/replace damaged floor/ceiling tiles.
• Replace quoin, miter and fender timbers on lock gates.

The Department of Facilities Management & Development at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Maintenance Assistant, Carpenter.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Maintenance Assistants (Carpenter) perform semiskilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of structures and other items. Incumbents may work with a variety of materials in addition to wood, including but not limited to, sheet metal, plastics, or aluminum.

Illustrative Duties

• Working from blueprints, drawings, oral or written instructions and using carpenter's hand tools and power tools, performs a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair and construction activities in the carpentry trade including but not limited to the following:
• Repairs structural woodwork and equipment such as doors, window sash, storm windows, screens, window guards, stairs and railings.
• Repairs, installs and adjusts locks, door closures, hinges, door checks and ether door hardware.
• Installs glass in windows, doors and partitions.
• Builds, repairs and installs such items as bookcases, shelving, tables, and racks using woodworking machines.
• Following instructions, assists skilled tradespersons in such construction activities as the erection or renovation of larger buildings and structures, and in the repair and construction of roofs.
• Builds forms for concrete work.
• Erects and moves wall partitions.
• Installs and replaces damaged floor and ceiling tile.
• Replaces quoin, miter and fender timbers on lock gates.
