SUNY Downstate Medical Center is seeking a full-time Maintenance Assistant in the Department of Facilities Management and Development. This role covers a range of tasks across trades, including metalworking, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, masonry, and roofing, to keep university facilities in good working order.

The position involves hands-on maintenance duties across multiple trades, with opportunities to work on heating systems, locks, and building renovations under supervision.

Responsibilities

• Operates machine tools and equipment to perform metalworking tasks (e.g., lathes, shapers, milling machines) as part of maintenance operations.
• Repairs, maintains, and services automotive and mechanical equipment including brakes, bearings, starters, and pumps.
• Performs routine replacement and repair of plumbing, steamfitting equipment, and related fixtures to maintain facility systems.
• Cuts, welds, and brazes metal materials; assists in building and maintaining fixtures and furniture; erects partitions and supports.
• Maintains heating and hot water equipment by replacing parts, cleaning, and adjusting thermostats and lines.
• Repairs and maintains locks by making keys, changing combinations, and installing new hardware.
• Performs masonry repairs such as pointing brick/stone, plaster patching, tile setting, and concrete work.
• Repairs, rebuilds, and assists in installing roofing materials.
