Job summary

Southland Health Care Center is seeking a Maintenance Assistant to perform routine repairs, preventive maintenance, and life-safety checks while supporting residents with a respectful environment.

The role covers general repairs, electrical upkeep, healthcare-specific duties, safety compliance, groundskeeping, and timely work orders. Strong physical ability and a high school diploma are preferred.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform general repairs: plumbing, drywall, carpentry, doors/windows.
• Maintain electrical & HVAC systems, replace bulbs and outlets.
• Support healthcare routines: oxygen concentrators, cleaning, and room moves.
• Support safety and compliance: test fire alarms, assist with drills, ensure regulations.
• Maintain outdoor areas: groundskeeping and waste removal; document tasks.

Position Summary

The maintenance assistant reports to the director of maintenance or facility supervisor. This hands-on role completes routine repairs, preventive maintenance, and life-safety checks while maintaining a respectful, supportive environment for residents.

Key Responsibilities

• General Repairs: Fix plumbing issues (unclogging toilets, fixing leaky faucets), patch and paint drywall, repair doors or windows, and handle basic carpentry.

• Electrical & Systems Upkeep: Replace light bulbs, switch out faulty electrical outlets, and perform routine maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units.

• Healthcare-Specific Duties: Check oxygen concentrator levels or filters, maintain specialized facility equipment, and assist with terminal cleaning or moving furniture during resident room changes.

• Safety & Compliance: Test fire alarms, check emergency generators and smoke detectors, and help staff run fire drills in compliance with state and federal regulations.

• Groundskeeping: Keep outdoor walkways clear, mow lawns, trim hedges, and remove trash from the exterior property.

• Work Orders: Review daily maintenance requests and log completed tasks promptly.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: Basic "jack-of-all-trades" handyman or building maintenance experience; previous experience in a healthcare or long-term care setting is a strong plus.

• Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

• Physical Demands: Ability to stand, bend, walk, and lift or carry heavy items (often up to 50 pounds or more).

• Soft Skills: Patience, compassion, and respectful communication when working around elderly or cognitively impaired residents
