Job summary

TRI Environmental, Inc. in Austin, TX seeks a Lead Maintenance and Repair Technician for a full-time, in-person role at our SW Austin facility. You will repair, maintain, and assemble a range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic testing equipment to support laboratory operations.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, fabrication, and debugging of components, reading schematics, and coordinating with vendors and customers. Strong CAD skills and MIG experience are a plus.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical aptitude with experience repairing, assembling, modifying, or maintaining equipment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and laboratory testing equipment.

Maintenance and Repair Technician

We are seeking a skilled candidate to serve as the lead Maintenance and Repair Technician at a full-service materials testing laboratory. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of various mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic testing equipment, with fabrication and assembly of components and systems. This role involves working with a variety of materials, operating fabrication equipment such as mills and lathes, performing light welding, working with plumbing and fixturing, and troubleshooting instrumentation and electronics. The Technician will be chiefly responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of a wide variety of machines and equipment to support testing operations.

Responsibilities

Equipment Repair & Maintenance

• Fabricate, repair, and maintain test equipment for outside sales, on-premises use, and inter-laboratory support.
• Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and laboratory testing equipment.
• Identify equipment defects or failures, determine appropriate repairs or modifications, and return equipment to proper working conditions.
• Perform preventive maintenance and routine upkeep to minimize equipment downtime and support laboratory testing operations.

Fabrication & Assembly

• Perform fabrication, modification, repair, and assembly of components using wood, metal, plastics, and other materials.
• Build and modify fixtures, components, and equipment to meet testing and laboratory requirements.
• Use power tools, hand tools, drilling and tapping equipment, and other shop equipment safely and effectively.
• Read measurements, drawings, schematics, and other technical documentation to fabricate and assemble components accurately.

Machining & Welding

• Familiarity with operating milling machines and lathes to help build and modify parts.
• Measure, cut, drill, tap, and fabricate components accurately.
• Perform light welding and related fabrication tasks as needed.

CAD & Technical Documentation

• Use CAD software, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar platforms, to create or modify equipment designs, components, fixtures, and technical drawings.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and plumbing diagrams.
• Create or update drawings and documentation to support equipment repairs, fabrication, assembly, and future maintenance.

Electrical, Instrumentation & Hydraulic Systems

• Wire, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation, sensors, electrical components, and data acquisition systems.
• Work with air, water, and hydraulic systems, including pressure fittings, tubing, plumbing, and related components.

Vendor & Customer Support

• Coordinate with outside vendors regarding equipment repairs, replacement components, technical questions, and maintenance requirements.
• Inspect and evaluate customer equipment submitted for repair, identify deficiencies or failures, and perform appropriate repairs or modifications.
• Communicate repair status, equipment issues, and technical requirements with customers, vendors, engineers, and laboratory personnel.

Engineering & Laboratory Support

• Work under the direction of the Engineering team to develop practical equipment modifications, fixtures, and repair solutions.
• Collaborate with laboratory technicians and engineers to improve equipment reliability, functionality, and efficiency.
• Support the development, assembly, testing, and implementation of new or modified laboratory equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the team and organization.

Requirements

Qualifications

• Mechanical Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude with experience repairing, assembling, modifying, or maintaining mechanical equipment. Automotive, industrial, manufacturing, or similar mechanical experience is a plus.
• Fabrication: Experience working with metal, wood, plastics, or similar materials. Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, drills, saws, and shop equipment.
• Machining: Experience operating mills and lathes; ability to measure, cut, drill, tap, and fabricate components accurately.
• Electrical & Instrumentation: Working knowledge of basic electrical systems, wiring, instrumentation, sensors, and troubleshooting.
• CAD: Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software; ability to read and interpret technical drawings is strongly preferred.
• Problem Solving: Ability to diagnose equipment problems, identify root causes, and develop practical repair solutions.
• Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and a high standard of quality when fabricating, assembling, repairing, and testing equipment.
• Communication: Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with engineers, technicians, vendors, and customers.
• Computer Skills: Basic computer proficiency and ability to document repairs, maintain records, and work with technical information electronically.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physical shop and laboratory work, including drilling, tapping, fabrication, welding, equipment assembly, and lifting up to 50 lb.
• MIG skills are a plus.
