Job summary

City of Lancaster (PA) seeks a maintenance worker to perform street repairs and water system maintenance. Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment, cleaning and painting facilities, and responding to emergencies as needed.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED and 2+ years of related experience, plus valid PA Driver’s License. Night shifts and after-hours availability may be required, with exposure to outdoor conditions and heavy lifting.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
  • At least two (2) years experience in similar maintenance work is required.
  • Experience in use and maintenance of standard tools used in construction and maintenance of public works facilities is required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate compressors, jackhammers, cement mixers and other equipment for repairing streets and other public works projects.
  • Operate a front-end loader to clean out sludge in drying beds and the grit chamber pit.
  • Clean and paint walls, ceilings, floors, windows and machinery and pipes.
  • Provide assistance to journey persons.
  • Respond to emergency situations for maintenance work as required.
  • Performs water system flushing on the night shift.
  • Participates in semi-skilled and other manual operations.
  • Acts as night dispatcher by responding to street emergencies at night.
  • Responsible for the disposal of trash in the uptown business district street cans.
  • Responsible for overseeing the community service police car wash.
  • Responsible for traffic control; putting out barricades for city events, block parties etc.
  • Cleans and flushes water mains, installs valves and hydrants and installs new house services.
  • Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps and makes water main cuts.
  • Set grade for sewer and street constructions; lays and caulks pipes, tamps and rakes asphalt.
  • Hoses out sludge in all water systems; reservoirs, wells, tanks, clarifiers, precipitator, holding tanks, sludge thickeners and mixer chambers.
  • Maintains fire hydrants by turning off valves, removing hydrants and replacing worn or defective parts; paints hydrants.

  • Personal Protective Equipment such as hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, rain gear, steel toed safety shoes, rain boots and respirators.

  • Requires heavy manual lifting up to approximately 100 pounds to the level of a pickup bed.

  • Requires operation of light automotive vehicles and power-driven equipment including pickup truck, dump truck and front-end loader.
