Job summary

General Plastics & Composites LP in Houston, TX seeks an experienced CNC Machinist to set up and operate manual and CNC lathes/mills and waterjet for production and engineering parts. You will read blueprints, perform machine setup, and support the assembly floor with precision machining.

The role requires 5+ years in CNC environments, strong math skills, and proficiency with micrometers, calipers, and other measurement tools. On-site position emphasizing safety and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years hands-on CNC machining experience.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints/drawings.
  • Must follow written and verbal English instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to procedures and SOPs.
  • Set up machines on manual and CNC lathes/mills and waterjet.
  • Support assembly with machine shop operations.
  • Maintain clean, safe work area and follow safety regulations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance per PM charts.
  • Visually inspect machines for damage or wear.
  • Train incoming Operators and Setup Technicians.

Job description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all engineering instruction, standard operation procedures, and all departmental procedures.
  • Perform machine set ups on manual lathes, CNC lathes, CNC mills, and Waterjet machines for all programs and part types including production and/or engineering parts with light assistance.
  • Performs typical machine shop operations to support the assembly floor.
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on machines as required per the P.M. charts.
  • Visual inspection of machine for damage or wear.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and drawings for all processes and programs.
  • Train all incoming Operators and Set Up Technicians.
  • Thorough knowledge of the following elements is expected:
    • Job orders.
    • Standard measuring tools including, but not limited to, Micrometers (O.D. & I.D.), Calipers, Bore Gages, Protractors, Height Gages, Micro-Height Gages, Molds, Optical Comparator and Depth Gages.
    • Verifying gage calibration.
    • Machine fixturing for all set ups.
    • All tooling, its name and function.
    • Familiarity with CNC programming/languages and knowledge of how to create and edit programs.
    • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances.
    • Machine Safety.
    • Machine lubrication (follow operation manual specifications).
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience:
  • 5+ years’ hands-on experience in CNC machining environments
  • Skills:
  • Strong mathematical aptitude
  • Proficient in using hand-held measuring tools
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English
  • Ability to assist other departments as necessary with management approval

  • Attendance & Punctuality: Arrives at workstation ready to begin work at the start of the shift and remains on the job until the end of the work period. Punctual for all appointments. In designated areas, remains on duty until a replacement is present.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • The employee is frequently required to stand for an extended period of time.
  • walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Required to work in a shop environment which may include hot or cold temperatures, humidity, high noise levels and hazardous fluids such as coolants and lubricants.
  • Willing and able to machine and handle a wide variety of materials, including but not limited to, Fiberglass Composites, Plastics, Metals and other Alloys.
