Job summary

Sora Resource Group in Salisbury, NC seeks a skilled Machinist to set up and operate CNC and manual mills and lathes to produce precision parts for large equipment, in a low-volume shop.

You will read blueprints, select tooling, write CNC programs, inspect parts with precision instruments, and work with fabrication, welding and assembly teams to maintain on-time production while upholding safety standards.

Qualifications

• 3-5 years of hands-on CNC and manual machining experience.
• Ability to read blueprints and GD&T, set up and run lathes and mills.
• Proficient in precision measurement with calipers, micrometers, height gauges.

Responsibilities

Job Title: Machinist

Location: Salisbury, North Carolina

Salary: $25-29/hour

The Machinist will set up and operate both CNC and manual machine tools, lathes and mills to produce precision parts used in the manufacture of large pieces of equipment in low volume work environment. This role works closely with our fabrication, welding, and assembly teams, as well as manufacturing and production scheduling, to keep jobs on track and meet quality standards.

Job Duties & Responsibilities of the Machinist:

• Set up and operate CNC and manual mills, lathes, and related machine tools to produce parts to print specifications.
• Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine dimensions, tolerances, and machining sequence.
• Select appropriate tooling, speeds, feeds, and work-holding methods for each job.
• Write, change, and prove out all CNC programs; troubleshoot and adjust programs to correct issues during production runs.
• Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.) to verify conformance to specifications.
• Report equipment issues promptly.
• Coordinate with fabrication, weld, and assembly supervisors to keep parts flowing on schedule.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop safety standards.
• Accurately document completed work, scrap, and downtime as required.

Education & Experience Requirements of the Machinist:

• 3-5 years of hands-on experience operating CNC and manual machine tools in a manufacturing or job shop environment.
• Experience with setting up and running lathes and mills, working with low-volume work.
• Strong ability to read blueprints and engineering drawings, including GD&T basics.
• Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and quality inspection methods.
• Working knowledge of CNC setup and program editing (Fanuc or similar controls preferred).
• Solid understanding of speeds, feeds, tooling selection, and materials (steel, aluminum, and similar).
• Strong math and problem-solving skills; attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced production setting.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; machining certification or technical training a plus.
• Hand on experience setting up CNC and manual machines in a job shop environment.
