Position Summary:

The Equipment Technician II provides technical and advisory support for engineering laboratory equipment, supporting student and faculty research projects, and assisting with demonstration equipment. Under supervision, the incumbent prepares laboratories for instruction, including equipment installation, maintenance, minor repairs, and modifications, employing comprehensive scientific and technical knowledge.

This role supports laboratory preparation, equipment repair, modification, design, fabrication, and installation of complex engineering equipment in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, as well as providing technical support to student activity groups. Responsibilities include designing equipment from oral or discussed requirements, developing models and systems, repairing complex factory or prototype equipment, and advising faculty and students on equipment capabilities. The incumbent also develops plans, specifications, and drawings, adapts donated or unique equipment, performs highly skilled repairs, analyzes malfunctions, and serves as a project consultant, maintaining a high standard of service quality.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,422 - $5,837 per month, commensurate with experience and skills

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,422 - $7,998 per month

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and operation within the specialty area.
  • Knowledge of repair and maintenance of tools and shop equipment, design, and drafting procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues, design, fabricate, modify, and repair technical equipment following plans, analyze problems, and install and maintain a variety of equipment.
  • Ability to read and write effectively, perform arithmetic computations.

Experience:

  • Equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area.
  • Experience with semi-skilled maintenance or related instructional support activities may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Trade school, technical arts training, apprenticeship, or military specialization in equipment maintenance can substitute for one year of experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with mechanical and thermal test equipment, automated machine tools, and laboratory materials including installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency with computers and peripherals, including basic office and graphics software.
  • Experience supporting a diverse student population in courses and projects.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot engineering laboratory equipment such as survey instruments, data acquisition/control systems, welding, sheet metal fabrication, foundry work, model making, hydraulic systems, woodwork, HVAC.
  • Knowledge of handling hazardous materials and maintaining safety records.
  • Ability to stay current with industry trends, interpret policies, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and customer service skills, with a professional, inclusive attitude.
  • Proficiency with computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and online systems.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good record.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, welcoming work environment.

  • Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, physical science, or related field.
  • Experience providing equipment or instructional support in an engineering lab.
  • Customer-oriented service skills and safety knowledge for labs with hazardous materials.

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
