The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) safeguards public health and enriches the environment by managing water resources, wastewater, and pollution reduction efforts. DEP is the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the U.S., employing nearly 6,000 staff members. Its water supply system includes 19 reservoirs and 3 lakes within a 2,000 square mile watershed.
NYC's extensive water and sewer infrastructure includes catch basins, hydrants, valves, reservoirs, groundwater wells, storage tanks, and miles of sewer and water mains—managed by the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO). The Division of Distribution Operations oversees water distribution across the five boroughs, operating and maintaining key infrastructure such as water tunnels, pumping stations, and treatment facilities.
As a Machinist within the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations, Division of Distribution Operations, Shaft Maintenance, you will work on infrastructure maintenance and repair, including setting up and operating machine shop equipment, inspecting and repairing water systems, fabricating parts, and overseeing maintenance tasks. Physical activities include climbing, lifting, working in confined or outdoor environments, and operating machinery in various weather conditions.
