Bowhead is hiring a Machinist to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD.
Responsibilities
- Perform assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed.
- Fabricate and/or modify many unique and precision items in support of the Army Research Laboratory programs.
- Select or adapt standard procedures or equipment, using fully applicable precedents. Receive initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed; perform recurring work independently; work is reviewed for technical adequacy or conformity with instructions.
- Perform technician work of broad scope and complexity requiring the ability to interpret, select, adapt, and apply many guidelines, precedents, and engineering principles and practices which relate to the area of specialization. Each assignment differs considerably from previous work and typically involves ingenuity and creative thinking to devise new ways of accomplishing objectives and in adapting existing equipment or techniques to solve the problems at hand.
- Work requires practical knowledge of scientific and engineering principles, design characteristics, maintenance requirements, troubleshooting techniques, laboratory processes, and the peculiarities of various equipment and devices used.
- Apply substantial judgment, initiative, skill, and experience in selecting, installing, and using complex instruments or devices; in modifying and adapting such instruments to obtain desired results; and in observing and noting significant trends in data.
- Have the technical competence to work efficiently and hold very close tolerances (+/- .005") as a minimum for the lowest level requirement, and (+/- .0001") for higher level fabrications.
- Meet with supervisor, team leader, or customers to plan scope of the project, discuss objectives, plan methods for accomplishing objectives, identify potential problem areas, and recommend alternatives to resolve conflicting requirements.
- Identify equipment and material needs, prepare cost estimates if required, and ensure data is within expected parameters.
- Work independently, often without the availability of immediate supervisory guidance.
- Keep the supervisor advised of progress, but receive little review during the progress of typical assignment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Proficient in generating machine codes from sketches/drawings to operate CNC mills and lathes to manufacture parts.
- Proficiency in manual machining prototype work.
- Ability to do minor welding, TIG, and stick oxyacetylene welding.
- Shop-related math skills.
- Experience with CNC Mills and Lathes, using G-Code.
- Ability to work from verbal and written instructions.
- Proficiency in MasterCAM software.
- Experience with CAM software and programming CNC machines.
- Proficient in use of YCM CNC milling machine with minimal assistance.
- Maintain records of engineering data such as tests and drawings.
This individual is authorized to use Government tooling and equipment, both manual and CNC, on-site at the Government facility.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
- Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically.
Security Clearance Requirements
Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is required.
