Job summary

Simpson Strong-Tie is hiring a Machine Operator in West Chicago, IL to operate and maintain autofill lines, ensure quality, and meet production plans. You will work on an autofill line, support material flow, and coordinate with teams to meet customer demands with safety first.

The role includes a 10-hour shift Monday-Thursday and overtime as needed, with a pay range of $20.91–$31.39 hourly. Candidates should have a GED or HS diploma, PIT certification, and at least 1 year of related experience.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License required.
  • SST PIT Certification required (will certify at hire).
  • 1 year of related experience or training.
  • Reading, writing, and understanding English at a minimum 6th grade level.
  • Math: add, subtract, multiply, and divide with fractions/decimals.
  • Follow safety rules and work instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, calibrate, operate, troubleshoot, clean, and adjust machine settings.
  • Monitor flow of materials to semi-automated and autofill machines.
  • Pack, set up, operate, and troubleshoot packing and labeling equipment.
  • Inspect finished goods and ensure quality and safety metrics.
  • Maintain activity logs and perform data entry in SAP/Kronos.

As a Machine Operator you are responsible for operating the assigned machinery, ensuring it runs smoothly, works at capacity without issue, and is appropriately maintained to ensure quality products. You will often be assigned to an autofill team to run an autofill line safely, efficiently, and cohesively to ensure product meets quality standards. You will be responsible for collaborating to ensure all raw materials and components are available to meet production plans and ensure all customer demands are met with a focus on quality and safety practices. This position works a 10 hr shift: Monday-Thursday 6:00 am – 4:30 pm, with overtime as needed.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

Set up, calibrate, operate, troubleshoot, clean, control, and adjust machine settings monitoring the flow of raw material or parts to semi-automated and autofill machines. (60%)

Pack, set up, operate, and troubleshooting packing and labeling equipment performing minor repairs when required. (10%)

Inspect and audit finished goods with attention to detail to ensure quality and safety metrics are met. Fix issues that occur during the shift by checking output to spot any machine-related mistakes or flaws and effectively communicating and/or escalating issues that arise in your assigned machine cell (10%)

Ensure accountability by keeping accurate records of approved and defective units or final products. Maintain activity logs. Perform job related data entry and labor scanning within SAP, Kronos, and other internal systems (10%)

Use powered walk-behind and pallet jack to move material to or from machines (5%)

Completes other tasks assigned. (5%)

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License required.
  • SST Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) Certification required (will certify at hire).
  • 1 year of related experience or training.
  • Communication: Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English at a minimum of 6th grade level. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Math Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Analysis/Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Safety: Ability to consistently prioritize safety by demonstrating a safe work practice by promoting a safe work environment.
  • Equipment: Ability to operate pallet jack. Knowledge of cartridge filling equipment, material drum presses and pumps, and shrink wrap equipment (preferred).
  • Quality: Ability to follow both written and oral instructions, including safety guidelines, work instructions, and company policies.
  • Technical: Ability to access and execute virtual transactions on the company tablet/computer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, see, talk, and hear. This role operates large equipment and needs to constantly position self to maintain the operation of equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and heavier weights with proper equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job may risk exposure to heat and/or cold, wet, or humid conditions, fumes and/or noxious odors, toxic/caustic chemicals, dust, loud noise levels and moving mechanical parts.

TRAVEL REQUIRED

This position requires domestic and international travel up to 5% of the time.

WORK STATUS AND LOCATION

This full-time position is in West Chicago, IL.

RELOCATION

Relocation is not available for this position.

PAY

$20.91 - $31.39 / hour
