The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.

Position responsibilities:
  • Safely operate road and culvert maintenance equipment such as: fork-lift; front end loader; farm tractors from 20-120 horsepower and implements; large dump trucks; motor graders; backhoes; and tractor-mounted cutters/mowers.
  • Load dump trucks with rock or fill, and haul loads to areas of culvert and road repair.
  • Grade and level roads and ditches for access, fire/crash efforts, and recreational access.
  • Digs ditches and replaces damaged pipe for proper road drainage.
  • Operate brush cutters for maintenance of road and trail right of way.
  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, perform minor repairs, and assist with major repairs.
  • Fabricate equipment as needed.
  • Assist with forest management activities, mowing, prescribed burning, and other tasks as assigned.

Work may involve traveling away from home for extended periods. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri, but some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.

NC Forest Service has emergency response duties mandated by law. Wildfire and disaster/emergency assistance require year-round readiness, 24/7, and may require extended hours and on-call availability.

Overnight travel is sometimes required.

Environmental exposures include adverse weather, pests, falling limbs, hunters, cramped conditions, heat, dust, smoke, and debris.

Occasional heavy lifting required.

Participates in incident management teams as assigned.

Residency within Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell, Washington County is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Skilled in minor equipment repairs.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment such as farm tractors, motor graders, excavators.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Good oral communication skills.
  • Self-starter with goal-oriented action.
  • Service-oriented, able to listen and cooperate.
Management Preferences:
  • Experience with farm tractor equipment operation.
Minimum Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent experience/education.

Additional Requirements:

Necessary licenses or certifications to operate assigned vehicles or equipment.
