About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join Babylist’s dynamic team. In this role, you will take ownership of the personalization domain, shaping how millions of families experience our platform daily. Your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and deploy advanced machine learning models that enhance user engagement through personalized feeds, recommendations, and search functionalities. As a key driver of our AI initiatives, you will influence the technical and product roadmap, ensuring that our personalization systems are effective, scalable, and aligned with our mission to serve families better. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product, design, and data, to translate ambiguous business problems into impactful ML solutions, from conception through to production and ongoing optimization.

Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in deploying production machine learning systems, particularly in personalization, recommender systems, or related areas.
  • Deep expertise in Python and the ML ecosystem, including pandas, scikit-learn, XGBoost, and PyTorch.
  • Proficiency in building custom representations from raw data, going beyond off-the-shelf embeddings.
  • Strong understanding of ML lifecycle management, including orchestration, deployment, monitoring, and retraining strategies.
  • Experience with large-scale data processing and storage solutions such as MySQL, Snowflake, and AWS SageMaker.
  • Ability to lead complex projects from problem definition to implementation, with a focus on measurable impact.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Curiosity and a proactive mindset to identify problems early and push innovative solutions forward.
Responsibilities
  • Own the personalization domain by designing and implementing models that power the homepage feed, recommendations, and search personalization.
  • Translate fuzzy business problems into clear ML objectives, developing models that improve customer experience and engagement.
  • Build and maintain custom embeddings derived from raw, domain-specific data, ensuring they serve multiple surfaces effectively.
  • Make architecture and modeling decisions that span teams and have long-term implications, ensuring scalability and maintainability.
  • Manage the full ML lifecycle, including orchestration, deployment, monitoring, and retraining to keep models honest and effective in production.
  • Define standards for AI-driven personalization, including evaluation metrics and validation processes to prevent confident errors.
  • Partner closely with product, design, and data teams to prioritize features and ensure alignment with business goals.
  • Mentor and coach senior engineers, guiding them through complex technical challenges and ambiguous situations.
  • Lead efforts to build foundational embeddings that enable uniform personalization across surfaces such as feeds, recommendations, and search.
  • Work on resolving cross-domain user identity challenges to improve recommendation consistency and relevance.
  • Experiment with and validate ranking models and recommendation strategies through live A/B testing and other experiments.
Benefits
  • Company-paid comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • A 401(k) plan with a competitive company match to support your financial future.
  • Generous paid parental leave for all parents, along with a structured return-to-work program.
  • Winter Wonder Week, a paid company-wide week off at the end of each year to rest and recharge.
  • Remote-work stipend to support a productive and comfortable home office environment.
  • Access to mental health and wellness resources to promote overall well-being.
