Job summary

Comstock Park Public Schools is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to support student health services on-site. The role involves administering medications, following individualized health plans, and coordinating with families and healthcare providers to ensure safe, effective student care.

The nurse will contribute to a collaborative health team, maintain accurate health records, and participate in school-wide health initiatives, while ensuring compliance with district policies and ADA

Qualifications

• Active Michigan LPN license.
• Current CPR and First aid certification.
• Completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education or obtained an associate's or higher degree.
• Demonstrated experience with medically fragile patients (e.g. diabetes, seizures, tracheostomy).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Provides medications and treatments to identified students according to the district's policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Applies knowledge of common medications and treatments to evaluate the side effects and effectiveness of services provided.
• Collects and documents data regarding the child's health status, (such as immunizations and nursing care) consistent with documentation guidelines.
• Provides written reports as required.
• Follows written health care plans.
• Administers first aid and care to children who are ill or injured according to district protocols.
• Communicates information from the child, family, physicians and other members of the health care/educational team to the registered nurse in order to facilitate coordination of services.
• May be required to accompany children that have medical needs.
• Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, in-services, etc.
• Responsible for carrying out educational activities as requested by the principal.
• Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents and the community in positive, supportive and cooperative ways.
• Provides input into the development of the LPN role.
• Responsible for good attendance and punctuality and following call-in procedures to assure a safe and healthy environment for students.
• Consistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience:

• Active Michigan LPN license.
• Current CPR and First aid certification.
• Must have:
  • Completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education; or
  • Obtained an associate's or higher degree.
• Demonstrated experience with medically fragile patients (i.e. diabetes, seizures, tracheostomy, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree.
• Experience with medically fragile children.

• Demonstrated good communication skills (verbal and written).
• Demonstrated ability to interact with parents, the public and staff members in a tactful and courteous manner.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, run, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment) including auscultation using a stethoscope. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus. The employee must be able to bend, push and/or pull loads, such as pushing children in wheelchairs or moving/rearranging furniture or assisting students with standing, transferring and walking. The employee must physically restrain students, when required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physically able to lift 20-100 pounds; strenuous walking, standing, and/or climbing; lifting and carrying; stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching; work outside and inside; work around moving objects; work on ladders and scaffolding; ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Compensation and benefits in accordance with the Comstock Park Educational Employees Association Educational Support Personnel Contract.

The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate. Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors.
