Job summary

UAB Medicine is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to join the Hospital Medicine unit. This full-time role involves providing bedside nursing care, patient education, and advocating for patients within a 31-bed unit focused on a variety of medical and surgical cases.

The position requires active Alabama LPN licensure, BLS certification (ACLS/PALS may be required depending on the unit), and the ability to work 7 a.m.–7 p.m. or 7 p.m.–7 a.m.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited Practical Nursing Program.
• Current LPN license in Alabama or endorsement.
• BLS certification required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• ACLS and/or PALS may be required depending on unit.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care to patients based on nursing process and hospital standards.
• Orient patients and families to the environment and act as patient advocate.
• Collect patient assessment data and notify RN of potential problems.
• Evaluate patient responses to care and document delivery of care.
• Respond effectively to emergency situations and maintain professional behavior.

Pay range: $22.90 - $37.25 / hour

Sign-on bonus: $5,000 new hire sign-on bonus may be available (full-time only)

Shifts: full-time AM and PM, flexi/PRN

Schedules: 7 a.m-7 p.m., 7 p.m. - 7 a.m.

Job Highlights

The Hospitalist 4 (HSP4) Unit is a 31-bed acute care unit that treats a variety of medical and surgical patients and has a strong focus on infectious disease (ID) patients. A unique patient type we care for includes those receiving Radioiodine I-131 treatment, a form of radiation therapy that can be used to treat thyroid conditions. UAB Hospital Medicine, or Hospitalist, was the first hospital medicine program in the state of Alabama and one of the first in the Southeast. They provide care for the largest population of patients discharged from UAB Medicine.

Job Description

Under general supervision, to provide nursing care to patients based on the nursing process, UAB Hospital Standards of Nursing Care, and UAB Hospital policies and procedures while ensuring quality of care. To orient patients and family members to surrounding environment, acting as a patient advocate. To collect patient assessment data and notify RN of potential problems. To evaluate patient s response to care and report findings to RN, document delivery of patient care, effectively respond to emergency situations, demonstrate positive interpersonal skills, meet patient s educational needs, and serve as a role model to other members of the patient care team.

Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited Practical Nursing Program required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Currently licensed or licensed by endorsement as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
