Job summary

Saint Patrick Catholic School in Norfolk, Virginia seeks a Lower School Teacher Assistant to support 2nd Grade students in their personal and academic growth. The role focuses on reinforcing instruction, classroom safety, and positive student engagement.

The successful candidate will work closely with the lead teacher, participate in faculty activities, and contribute to a nurturing, faith-centered learning environment. This is a full-time 10-month position starting Oct 1, 2026.

Qualifications

• Prior experience supporting teachers in classrooms is preferred.
• Ability to reinforce instruction and monitor student progress.
• Comfort with digital technologies used to manage assignments.

Responsibilities

• Provide support to the classroom teacher and students by reinforcing the teacher’s instruction.
• Understand child development and use this knowledge to maximize a child’s experience.
• Maintain a safe, respectful classroom environment in line with school guidelines.
• Prepare materials for lessons and ensure spaces are safe, positive, clean, and conducive to learning.
• Supervise and instruct students in the teacher’s absence as needed.
• Observe and report progress and needs to the teacher.
• Assist in literacy development and teaching methods with materials.
• Attend meetings and participate in professional development activities.

Saint Patrick Catholic School is currently seeking a Lower School Teacher Assistant to nurture and support our 2nd Grade students in their personal and academic growth.

Founded in 2005, Saint Patrick Catholic School (Norfolk, Virginia) is an independent Catholic school with an enrollment of approximately 400 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eight. • Prepare materials for lessons and ensure classroom spaces are safe, positive, clean, and conducive to learning
• Assume full responsibility for supervising and instructing students in the teacher’s absence
• Observe and report student progress and special needs for individual students to the teacher
• Build personal knowledge of child development and teaching methods and materials to support literacy
• Attend regular faculty and department meetings; participate in designated professional development activities; contribute to teamwork and positive morale
• Participate in faith formation experiences
• Perform other duties as directed by the lead teacher and administration
• Comply with school policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, possess strong interpersonal skills, and be able to solve problems without sacrificing relationships
• Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time
• Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, climb stairs, bend, crouch, crawl, stoop, and run
• Experience with classroom management and working with digital technologies

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED
• Post graduation from an accredited college or university, with an interest in a teaching career, preferred
• A minimum of one year of experience working with children, preferably in an academic setting
