Qualifications

Job description

Montessori Community School (MCS), an independent Montessori school, seeks an engaging Lower Elementary teacher for its LE program (grades 1-3). Located on the border of Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina, MCS is accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS).

Responsibilities:
  • Create, plan, and assist in implementing the Lower Elementary Montessori curriculum.
  • Collaborate with LE team and classroom co-teacher to deliver high quality Montessori instruction.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary and aesthetically pleasing environment and an orderly, challenging and engaging curriculum.
  • Adheres to Elementary record keeping requirements:
  • current and complete records of each student’s attendance, growth and development, specifically:
  • Weekly, monthly, yearly curriculum plan.
  • Cumulative records for each student showing date of individual and group lessons and level of achievement.
  • Daily records of observations of each student.
  • Portfolios of work for each student.
  • Student weekly work journals with daily entries kept by the individual student.
  • Supervise and guide students in the classroom, outdoor learning environments, on field trips and other off-campus experiences as an extension of learning, as well as participate in the planning of these experiences with co-teachers.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians through email, meetings, conversations, notes, phone calls; conduct conferences; compose weekly newsletter or other regular communications; meet with parents/guardians, potentially outside of school hours, to discuss a student’s learning, social or emotional concerns.
Ideal candidates have the following:
  • 3-5 years of experience teaching students.
  • Montessori certification through a MACTE accredited Montessori training center. Montessori training may be sponsored by the school for teachers who do not already have credentials.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Committed to the mission and core values of MCS, which include "respect, integrity, community, and love of learning".
  • Flexible team player with a "can-do" attitude.
  • Working knowledge of Google suite or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate in teams with a wide range of individuals.
  • Committed to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and diverse learning community.
Essential Functions:
  • Overall supervision and daily class functions of a group of LE students during the school day.
  • Observes all rules and regulations at MCS and local, state, or national regulatory agencies pertaining to the health, safety, and care of children.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students in the classroom and in the community.
  • Provide a supportive and collaborative partnership with other LE teachers by consistently communicating.
  • Maintain student record keeping, lesson planning, parent/guardian reports, and parent/guardian conferences as requested.
  • Adhere to the school handbook, guidelines, and professional standards.
  • Regular daily attendance is a core function of this position.
  • The physical requirements of this position include but are not limited to: lifting up to 20 pounds, crawling, bending, hiking, sitting, and other physical activities related to outdoor classroom activities, field trips, and community activities.
  • Work will be conducted in both indoor and outdoor environments.
