Teach several grade levels with multiple sections to PreK-4th grades through collaboration with a team that is a leader in science education. Follow lesson plans, working with co-teachers, in line with curriculum objectives and SCH science curriculum maps. This position starts August 22, 2025.
Essential Functions
- Teaches Lower School students academic and social skills, with class content incorporating Life, Earth, and Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Environmental Education.
- Develops and implements lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives and school mission statement, and in collaboration with other LS Science teachers. Integrates technology in student learning experiences.
- Facilitates learning by using web-based learning resources, the Lower School science labs, outdoor gardens, and the surrounding Wissahickon woods and stream.
- Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of students.
- Provides students with a variety of formats to demonstrate skill mastery.
- Provides timely feedback on students' progress toward skill mastery.
- Teaches rules of conduct and creates a warm and welcoming learning environment.
- Maintains order in the classroom and throughout the common areas of the campus, including the playground.
- Discusses pupils' academic and behavioral progress with teachers and parents, as needed.
- Keeps records of students' progress and writes narrative comments twice a year.
- May coordinate field trips.
- Collaborates with homeroom teachers as required or requested.
- Supervises students at lunch, recess, and dismissal as assigned.
- Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications
- At minimum, a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and/or major course work in the sciences.
- At least two (2) years of experience working with young children.
- Excellent communication, both oral and written.
- Ability to develop and implement curriculum, assessments, and utilize teaching methodologies/best practices.
- Strong background in the Life, Earth, Physical, and Environmental Sciences.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment for Elementary Science Education.
- Ability to provide/facilitate activities for children that encourage healthy growth.
- Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
- Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children.
- Demonstrates effective classroom management.
- Knowledge of child development theory and practice.
- Excellent knowledge of computer skills with experience in the use of Google Docs, Slides, etc, and e-mail. Working knowledge of Classroom Management software and iPads is helpful and will be expected as a regular part of the position.
- Comfortable with a team-based work structure; ability to demonstrate flexibility on the job.
- Demonstrated initiative, conscientiousness, and complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
- Demonstrated understanding of cultural competency skills and enthusiasm for issues of diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment.
- Be able to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally.
- Work primarily in a traditional, climate-controlled school environment.
- Able to move around a classroom and other school environments.
