Job summary

Qualifications

  • Five years of experience designing commercial fire detection systems.
  • NICET III certification in Fire Alarm or Special Hazards is required.
  • Strong knowledge of fire alarm codes, NFPA 72, and operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret fire alarm project drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Review project bid, pre-award, and contract documents to understand scope and design requirements.
  • Design low voltage systems per NFPA codes, AHJ requirements, and Sciens standards.
  • Conduct onsite surveys to evaluate conditions affecting design and installation.
  • Create design documents using AutoCAD, including floor plans, riser diagrams, schematics, and power calculations.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, sales, project managers, drafters, and subcontractors throughout the design-build process.
  • Manage RFIs and design-related comments and revisions.
  • Coordinate development of submittal and design packages to meet milestones and code requirements.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to drafters and design team.

Job description

Sciens Building Solutions is seeking a Senior Fire Alarm System Designer responsible for the design and engineering of fire alarm systems in accordance with NFPA codes and project specifications. This position is responsible for designing and engineering systems as represented by Sciens, and responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of all associated projects. Ideal candidates will possess manufacturer training, in-house training, and on-the-job experience as it relates to design. The Senior Fire Alarm System Designer applies engineering principles to every design to meet code and customer requirements; review product specifications and performance requirements to determine designs that can be installed in customer facilities; interface with CAD operators, project managers and sales, and support their various needs. The person in this role functions as a team leader in all quality procedures that relate to design, engineering, and drafting.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING (and doing well!)
  • Review project bid, pre-award, and contract documents to understand project scope, specifications, and design requirements.
  • Design low voltage systems in accordance with applicable NFPA codes, project specifications, AHJ requirements, and Sciens quality standards.
  • Conduct onsite surveys to evaluate existing conditions and identify factors that may impact system design and installation.
  • Develop and review design documents using AutoCAD and related software, including floor plans, riser diagrams, schematics, system power calculations, control panel layouts, BODs, and project-specific specifications.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, sales, project managers, drafters, project administrators, subcontractors, and outside designers throughout the design-build process.
  • Manage design-related RFIs, review comments, and revisions, including responses to government, FPE, and AHJ feedback.
  • Coordinate the development of submittal and design packages, ensuring project milestones, deadlines, quality standards, and code requirements are met.
  • Perform quality control reviews of submittals and design deliverables prior to submission for approval and communicate approval status with project management.
  • Coordinate pre-construction job review meetings and support project managers throughout construction and installation by resolving design issues, coordinating material/equipment procurement, and assisting with as-built documentation.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to drafters and design team members while supporting continuous improvements in the efficiency, quality, and proficiency of the design and engineering department.
WHAT WE LIKE ABOUT YOU

  • Minimum NICET III-certified in Fire Alarm and/or Special Hazards.
  • Strong working knowledge of fire alarm codes and operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and other software programs required to perform job.
  • Proficient understanding of current NFPA 72 design standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret fire alarm project drawings and specifications.
  • Strong leadership and time management skills; and the ability to multi-task.
  • Working understanding of fire alarm design.

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines with a sense of urgency.
