Job description

Position Overview

Sciens Building Solutions is seeking an experienced Fire Alarm Systems Technician with programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting capabilities and experience. This position will work closely with our sales team, field project teams, and clients to ensure a sound design, and seamless installation and commissioning of our fire alarm solutions. This is a key position for our growing team and requires attention to detail in all aspects of executing projects. Customer and employee interface requires a high degree of effective human relations. Communication skills, both verbal and written, are important elements of the position.

Responsibilities
  • Review system layouts and coordinate with engineering, project management, and sales departments for successful project execution.
  • Produce field surveys and daily project logs of activity.
  • Program and commission complex fire alarm systems, leading to final acceptance by customers and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Produce detailed commissioning and inspection reports in accordance with NFPA.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting and effective resolution.
  • Deliver projects on schedule and within cost budgets.
  • Program systems via laptop computers.
  • Assist in the oversight of project inventory and be responsible for vehicle inventory.
  • Provide support, guidance, and expertise to other technicians.
  • Assist in managing job scheduling and job progress in an efficient and cost‑effective manner, with a strong focus on quality.
  • Demonstrate proper operation of equipment and control units to customers, explaining proper use and how to respond to any system signals.
  • Comply with industry standard procedures and Sciens safety programs/policies.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two to five (2-5) years of experience in a technician role within the fire‑life safety industry.
  • Ability to program and commission mid‑range fire alarm systems independently.
  • Ability to terminate fire alarm control units and field equipment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with onsite contractors.
  • Intermediate understanding of fire alarm circuit integrity and of troubleshooting for circuit opens, shorts, or ground conditions.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge related to the use and installation of software.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper operation of equipment and control units.
  • Intermediate knowledge of NFPA72 code requirements for the installation of a fire alarm system.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Section907 of the International Fire Code or state‑adopted fire code.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Section909 of the International Building Code or state‑adopted building code.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Article760 of NFPA70 (electrical code) for the installation of fire systems and circuiting.
  • State, local, contract, and/or product specific certifications as determined by the business (NICETI, etc.).
  • Knowledge of state fire procedures, filing, and requirements.
  • Ability to read fire system design drawings.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work independently with some supervision.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and ability to obtain OSHA10 certification.
  • Proficient in issue resolution.
  • Excellent organizational, decision‑making, and communication skills.
  • Physical fitness to perform demanding work, including frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds), work from heights, climb ladders, stand and walk for most of the workday.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel occasionally overnight, as needed.
