Job summary

Our client in the Washington, DC area is seeking a Lead Technician to install, test, maintain, and repair low voltage systems across the DMV region. You will read blueprints, manage cabling installations (fiber, CAT5e/6), build telecom closets, and ensure safety compliance on diverse projects.

Daily travel to active sites in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland is required; coordination with general contractors and trades is essential to maintain schedules and quality.

Qualifications

  • Experience installing and troubleshooting low voltage systems.
  • Strong understanding of structured cabling, fiber optics, and telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Ability to read blueprints and engineering drawings.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work effectively with clients, general contractors, and fellow trades.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and complete projects on schedule while maintaining quality workmanship and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret engineering blueprints and vendor specifications for fiber optic and electronic systems.
  • Install, test, terminate, troubleshoot, and repair fiber optic, coaxial, CAT3, CAT5e, and CAT6 cabling.
  • Build telecommunications closets including racks, backboards, patch panels, cross-connects, and associated hardware.
  • Install grounding systems for racks, equipment, and cabling.
  • Perform fiber optic splicing and termination using both single and mass fusion splicing equipment.
  • Conduct fiber acceptance testing utilizing power meters, EXFO test equipment, and OTDR testing equipment.
  • Troubleshoot cable faults including opens, shorts, crossed pairs, and transposed pairs.
  • Install electrical and low voltage components according to project specifications.
  • Coordinate daily activities with general contractors and other construction trades to maintain project schedules.
  • Update engineering documentation and upload testing results into project databases.
  • Ensure all work complies with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and customer quality standards.

Our client is one of the nation's leading technology systems integrators serving clients in financial services, legal, technology, and life sciences. Their business model provides clients with a single source for the design, installation, and maintenance of large, complex Audio Visual, Communications, PoE Lighting, and Security Systems.

About the Role

The Lead Technician serves as the primary field leader responsible for installing, testing, maintaining, and repairing low voltage systems including structured cabling, fiber optics, security, fire alarm, audio-visual, and data network infrastructure. Reporting directly to the Area Operations Manager, this individual is responsible for ensuring all work is completed in accordance with site-specific requirements while maintaining strict compliance with OSHA regulations and client's safety standards.

Work Location & Territory

This is a field-based position supporting projects throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area, including:

  • Washington, DC
  • Northern Virginia
  • Maryland (including the DC suburbs extending to Baltimore)

Candidates must reside within the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) region and be located within approximately 1.5 hours of Washington, DC, as the majority of project assignments will be throughout the Washington, DC area.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in active construction environments.
  • Stand for extended periods (4-8 hours).
  • Walk, bend, kneel, and climb stairs as needed.
  • Climb ladders up to 12 feet and work from scaffolding when required.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Possess excellent hand, wrist, and arm dexterity.
  • Read and interpret project documentation and determine when additional information is required.
Travel Requirements

This position requires daily travel to active project sites throughout Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland (including the DC suburbs extending to Baltimore). Candidates should be comfortable traveling between job sites as business needs require.
