Job summary

Jamestown Community Center in San Francisco is seeking part-time Safety and Support staff to monitor school grounds and support after-school programs at Longfellow Elementary.

Hours up to 25 per week, pay starts at $23.50–$26.00 per hour, non-exempt. Duties include supervision, incident reporting, basic first aid, and maintaining a safe environment for youth and participants.

Qualifications

• Experience working with multi-ethnic, middle school youth.
• Ability to provide project-based learning opportunities to youth.
• Experience maintaining records.
• Fluency in Spanish, Chinese, and/or Tagalog preferred.
• Background in youth development or community programs required.
• SFUSD Instructional Aide qualification or equivalent required.

Since 1971, Jamestown Community Center has been providing learning opportunities and safe spaces for low-income youth in San Francisco’s Mission District. Our youth represent the low-income, racially and ethnically diverse community in which they live and attend school. Our strategy is to serve a core group of neighborhood youth through multiple high-impact programs as they grow, with a full range designed to help them transition from children into confident young adults.

Programs include arts instruction, academic tutoring, sports, leadership development, employment, counseling, and parent programs. The Jamestown Community Center is located in San Francisco’s Mission District and provides services at several sites. Jamestown is an affiliate of UnidosUS.

Under the supervision of the school Site Manager, Safety and Support staff will monitor the school grounds, including the yard, restrooms, interior of the school building, and surrounding school grounds to ensure safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Site Supervision

• Direct students, youth, and adults not enrolled in after-school programs off the school site.
• Patrol the schoolyard and school building.
• Be aware of activities around the school.
• Patrol the building and check classrooms being used by programs.
• Ensure that our participants are safe and not outside of the school grounds.
• Hold youth accountable to program expectations.
• Problem-solve, mediate, and dispute conflicts as they arise.
• De-Escalate youth during program time
• Step in to cover class if needed
• Provide first aid care if needed
• Substitute classes

Administration

• Maintain a daily log of events.
• Report any vandalism or injuries immediately and fill out necessary documentation.
• Meet as needed with the site manager.

Compliance

• Comply with and implement Jamestown's policies and procedures, and laws about the operation of Jamestown.
• Maintain a professional attitude and work ethic.
• Maintain confidentiality of participants and comply with all laws regarding youth work.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds.
• Working conditions include standard office and school settings as well as occasional travel within the Bay Area.
• Use a computer, phone, copier, and office equipment.
• Fingerprint and TB clearance.

This is an hourly, non-exempt, part-time position up to 25 hours/week, with no benefits.
