Since 1971, Jamestown Community Center has been providing learning opportunities and safe spaces for low‑income youth in San Francisco’s Mission District. Our youth represent the low‑income, racially and ethnically diverse community in which they live and attend school. We serve a core group of neighborhood youth with high‑impact programs that guide them from childhood into confident young adults. Programs include arts instruction, academic tutoring, sports, leadership development, employment, counseling, and parent programs. Position Description

Jamestown is seeking experienced, enthusiastic and creative individuals to lead youth‑development focused activities. The ideal candidate has experience teaching after‑school classes to elementary school youth and a background in physical education, arts, cooking, STEM, media, theater, dance or any other unique enrichment. This position collaborates with school day staff to lead activities, promote literacy, and support healthy development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan a project‑oriented curriculum to support youth’s social‑emotional, academic, and physical success by incorporating the five supports and opportunities of Youth Development Theory and Practice: safety, youth participation, skill building, community involvement, and relationship building.
  • Develop and lead a comprehensive curriculum that embeds high‑quality skill‑building through activities that are sequenced, active, focused, and explicit.
  • Plan regular, creative, literacy‑based activities that allow youth to build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Prepare and organize teaching materials, including long‑term plans, unit plans, and daily lesson plans.
  • Work with the Site Manager and school day staff to implement activities aligned with school curriculum and California’s Common Core Standards.
  • Communicate student progress to teachers.
  • Attend professional development opportunities with school.
  • Develop an understanding of academic curricula, expectations, and standards.
  • Be familiar with the program’s selected literacy skills of focus and incorporate literacy into all activities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development by engaging in weekly collaborative planning with peers, undergoing observations and coaching sessions, and implementing new skills and knowledge into practice.
  • Offer professional mentorship and supervision to a high school apprentice.
  • Plan and supervise field trips.
  • Supervise and support daily physical activities and homework help.
  • Assist in evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Comply with Jamestown policies and procedures, and laws pertaining to Jamestown’s operation.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and work ethic.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift and carry 25 pounds.
  • Work in standard office and school settings, with occasional travel within the Bay Area.
  • Use a computer, phone, copier and office equipment.
  • Fingerprint and TB clearance required.
Compensation and Benefits

This is an hourly, non‑exempt position, up to 25 hours a week, with no benefits.

Qualifications
  • A passion for Jamestown’s mission and a commitment to providing young people with the highest‑quality youth development experience.
  • Two or more years of experience teaching multi‑ethnic, multicultural elementary school youth.
  • Experience teaching recreation.
  • Strong understanding of the theory and practice of youth development.
  • Strong elementary school level math and literacy skills.
  • Ability to build meaningful relationships and engage with elementary school youth.
  • Creativity and interest in planning hands‑on projects for youth.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred.
  • Provide documentation that meets SFUSD Instructional Aid requirement or take equivalency exam.
