Job summary

Norman Public Schools seeks an LPN to deliver comprehensive health services in our middle and elementary schools. The role involves administering medications, conducting screenings, and coordinating with staff and families to ensure student wellness.

The ideal candidate has an Oklahoma LPN license, CPR certification, and at least 3 years of nursing experience with children or students with disabilities. This 190-day contract supports school health programs across multiple sites.

Qualifications

  • Current Nursing License from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.
  • Current certification in AHA Healthcare Provider CPR/AED First Aid.

Responsibilities

  • Work cooperatively with the district health staff to provide a variety of health care services to students.
  • Administer medications in accordance with Board of Education policy and Oklahoma State Law.
  • Attend and participate in safe and healthy school committees and individual health care plan/placement meetings when appropriate.
  • Conduct health screenings and make appropriate referrals.
  • Communicate with District personnel, students and parents to exchange information, coordinate activities, and resolve issues or concerns related to student health, medications, accidents, emergencies and daily medical activities.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records, logs and reports related to student health, medication, accidents and daily medical activities.
  • Attend staff meetings and conferences regarding health services.
  • Maintain health room/clinic in a clean, orderly and safe condition: maintain inventory and order first aid and health room supplies as necessary.
  • Authorize exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious conditions according to OSDH/OSDE and Norman Public Schools Guidelines.

Contract Length: 190 days

Work Schedule: Elementary 7:25 am to 3:25 pm

Work Schedule: Middle 8am to 4pm

Credentials: Current Nursing License from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing, Current certification in AHA Healthcare Provider CPR/AED First Aid

Education: Graduation from an approved LPN program

Training or Experience Required: Minimum of 3 years nursing experience. Previous work and/or volunteer experience with children, teenagers, and students with disabilities is preferred. Certified American Heart Association CPR Instructor preferred.

Special Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

Communication Skills (oral, written, or business): Basic communication skills to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries. Includes filling out forms, complete routine reports, collect data, and make health referrals. Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology.

Reading and Interpreting: Read and interpret written or printed materials such as medical records/charts/articles, diagrams and instructional material.

Mathematical Skills: Perform routine computations requiring knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and/or percentages. Ability to calculate medication dosages. Business Machines (like computers, copiers, etc.): Use business machines that can be easily learned from simple manuals or simple verbal instructions. Such machines include but are not limited to copier, scanner, laminator, and fax machines.

Computer Skills: Moderate skill and comfort with computers and typing. Proficient with office processing software programs, electronic medical records, Google Suite, including document scanning and uploading.

Office Filing and Retrieving: Responsible for filing and retrieving documents and data from digital filing systems.

Spelling Skills: Basic spelling is required.

Medical Equipment Usage: Uses specialized medical or screening equipment with expertise acquired through experience and/or training.

Procedure Skills: Ability to perform a wide variety of nursing duties to include procedures such as: catheterizations, tube feedings, suctioning, insulin injections/calculations, blood sugar checks, and inhaler/nebulizer treatments.

Data Recording/Record Keeping: Maintain student health records.

Site: Middle or Elementary School and may travel throughout district to other locations as needed

Reports To: Director Health Services, Supervising School Nurse, Building Administrator

Job Goal (Purpose of Position): Under direct supervision of the assigned school nurse supervisor, the employee will implement, manage and deliver school health services to maximize health and wellness in the school community. These services will be provided in compliance with State Laws and District Policy.

An incumbent in this position will follow generally standardized operating policies and procedures. On occasion will have to interpret policies and procedures and follow predetermined solutions established by higher level supervision or operating procedures.

Contact with Others: An incumbent in this position has little to no regular public contact other than with members of own staff or district patrons. Some interpersonal interaction or communication is required outside of the specific classroom environment with other staff and parents.

Other Performance Measures:

Successful performance of the job requires customer service/people skills to resolve problems and provide information as requested. It requires following safety guidelines and policies to reduce accidents or injury to self or to students. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies, and other work-habits concerns. Creativity, initiative and effective problem solving is important to the success of the position.

Physical/Mental Requirements And Working Conditions

This job requires frequent bending/stooping and occasional to frequent squatting/crouching, reaching above the shoulder, and pushing and pulling. There is occasional lifting up to 50 pounds to assist the lifting of chairs, classroom equipment and supplies. The incumbent must have the dexterity to operate keyboards, computers, copy machines, and medical equipment. Must be able to communicate with students, parents, faculty, staff and the medical community. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
