Job summary

Edmond Public Schools is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to support health needs in the Special Services Department. The LPN will care for students with chronic conditions, respond to medical emergencies, and help develop self-care skills in collaboration with teachers and nurses.

The role requires an Oklahoma LPN license, CPR certification, and pediatric nursing experience is preferred. The position is full-time and stationed on school grounds with classroom‑based duties.

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma, graduate from an accredited LPN school, and be CPR certified.
  • Pediatric nursing experience is preferred.
  • A valid license for a Practical Nurse from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities

  • Give medications and tube feedings as scheduled.
  • Administer treatments such as suctioning or physical therapy.
  • Chart tasks and medications in a timely manner.
  • Assist students with daily tasks as assigned by classroom teacher.
  • Provide individual tutoring as needed.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene.
  • Work with small group activities.
  • Address behavior issues as required.
  • Perform classroom laundry or clean‑up tasks.
  • Support teacher with classroom activities.
  • Remain on school site during all breaks, including lunch.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Position: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Special Services Department. Reports to Principal, School Nurse (RN), and Director of Student Services.

Job Goal

The LPN will assess and manage health needs of students with chronic conditions, handle medical emergencies, and support total care implementation. They work with special education teachers to develop student self‑care skills and serve as an instructional partner and crisis supporter.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Give medications and tube feedings as scheduled.
  • Administer treatments such as suctioning or physical therapy.
  • Chart tasks and medications in a timely manner using proper forms.
  • Assist students with daily tasks as assigned by classroom teacher.
  • Provide individual tutoring as needed.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene.
  • Work with small group activities.
  • Address behavior issues as required.
  • Perform classroom laundry or clean‑up tasks.
  • Support teacher with classroom activities.
  • Remain on school site during all breaks, including lunch.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Length of Contract

One hundred seventy‑four (174) contract days. Salary commensurate with experience under the negotiated agreement of the Supportive Employees of Edmond (SEE). Hours may be adjusted according to student need.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated by the Coordinator of Special Education with direct supervision of a Registered School Nurse (RN) in accordance with board policies and state law.

Qualification Requirements
Education and Experience

Must have a high school diploma, graduate from an accredited LPN school, and be CPR certified. Pediatric nursing experience is preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A valid license for a Practical Nurse from the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

Confidentiality / Personal Contacts

The LPN must preserve confidentiality regarding students, parents, and staff. Professional attitude and effective communication are essential.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, write clear correspondence, and present information in one‑on‑one or small group settings.

Mathematical Skills

Perform dosage calculations; knowledge of fractions, percentages, and ratios is required. Ability to present information and answer questions to staff, parents, and the public.

Reasoning Skills

Capable of solving practical problems, interpreting varied instructions, and making responsible judgments.

Other Skills and Abilities

Observe, evaluate, and report medication reactions; secure emergency care; use computers and related technology; establish working relationships with staff; dress in appropriate clothing (scrubs preferred). Perform duties with awareness of district and board requirements.

Physical Demands

Need to be in good physical health, attend regularly, and perform standing, walking, sitting, talking, and occasional lifting up to 75 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.

Work Environment

Work environment ranges from quiet to loud depending on activities. Employees regularly work inside the school environment.
