POSITION: Long-Term Substitute Teacher – High School Integrated Social Studies

REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Assistant Building Principal or Designee

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Temporary, 9-12 Weeks, Master Agreement, FLSA Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's and/or Master's Degree in his/her area of Instruction/Education
  • Valid Ohio Certification/Licensure by the State of Ohio, Department of Educationto instruct in his/her area of professional competency and/or assignment
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License
  • Must pass criminal background check

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Ohio teaching license in Integrated Social Studies (Grades 7–12).
  • Previous experience teaching or substitute teaching at the high school level.
  • Background or coursework in history, government, political science, or related social studies fields.
  • Familiarity with Ohio Learning Standards for Social Studies.
  • Experience with classroom management, lesson planning, grading, and student assessment

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Long-Term Substitute Integrated Social Studies Teacher is responsible for providing effective classroom instruction and maintaining continuity of learning during the absence of the regularly assigned teacher. This position will provide instruction in World History (Grade 9), U.S. History (Grade 10), and a Current Events elective course.

The successful candidate will be expected to follow established curriculum and instructional plans, develop lessons as needed, assess student progress, maintain classroom expectations, and create a positive learning environment. Instruction should align with Ohio Learning Standards for Social Studies and district educational expectations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Instruction and Curriculum

  • Provide daily instruction in assigned social studies courses in accordance with district curriculum and Ohio Learning Standards.
  • Implement existing lesson plans and develop additional instructional materials as necessary to maintain academic progress.
  • Deliver engaging, age-appropriate instruction using a variety of teaching strategies and educational resources.
  • Maintain continuity of instruction and ensure students remain on track with established course objectives.
  • Adapt instructional strategies to accommodate students with varying academic abilities and learning needs.
  • Incorporate historical documents, primary and secondary sources, technology, and relevant instructional materials.
  • Communicate with building administration and appropriate staff regarding curriculum pacing and instructional needs.

2. World History – Grade 9

  • Provide instruction covering major events, developments, civilizations, and historical movements in world history.
  • Assist students in understanding the relationships between historical events and contemporary global issues.
  • Develop students' abilities to analyze historical information, evaluate sources, and demonstrate critical thinking.
  • Follow the established course curriculum and maintain appropriate instructional pacing.

3. U.S. History – Grade 10

  • Provide instruction in United States history aligned with Ohio's high school American History learning standards.
  • Cover significant political, economic, social, and cultural developments throughout American history.
  • Incorporate historical analysis, document interpretation, and evidence-based reasoning into classroom instruction.
  • Support student preparation for applicable Ohio State Tests in American History.
  • Monitor student understanding and provide additional instructional support when needed.

4. Current Events – Elective

  • Facilitate instruction and classroom discussions involving current local, national, and international events.
  • Encourage students to examine contemporary issues using credible sources and multiple perspectives.
  • Promote media literacy, critical thinking, civic awareness, and responsible citizenship.
  • Guide respectful, balanced discussions of current events and potentially controversial topics.
  • Connect contemporary issues to historical events, governmental processes, and civic responsibilities.
  • Maintain professional neutrality and ensure classroom instruction remains educational rather than partisan.

5. Classroom Management and Student Support

  • Maintain a safe, positive, respectful, and structured classroom environment.
  • Follow established classroom procedures, student expectations, and district disciplinary policies.
  • Supervise students and maintain appropriate classroom behavior.
  • Establish positive working relationships with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Implement student accommodations and modifications as outlined in IEPs, Section 504 Plans, and other applicable support plans.
  • Address student academic and behavioral concerns in collaboration with building administration and appropriate staff.

6. Student Assessment and Recordkeeping

  • Prepare, administer, and grade classroom assignments, quizzes, tests, and other assessments.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student grades, attendance, and academic records using district-approved systems.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction when necessary.
  • Provide feedback to students regarding academic performance.
  • Communicate student progress and concerns to parents/guardians and administrators as appropriate.
  • Maintain organized instructional records to support a smooth transition when the regularly assigned teacher returns or the assignment concludes.

7. Professional Responsibilities

  • Report to work consistently and follow the established school schedule.
  • Collaborate with administrators, department members, intervention specialists, and other school personnel.
  • Attend required staff meetings, professional development, and other assigned activities as applicable to the position.
  • Follow all district policies, procedures, safety protocols, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Maintain professional communication with students, parents/guardians, and staff.
  • Perform assigned supervisory responsibilities and other duties as directed by building administration.
  • Maintain flexibility and adaptability to meet the instructional needs of the classroom throughout the assignment.

OTHER DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

KNOWLEDGE OF:Board policies and procedures, building policies and procedures, student code of conduct, community resource agencies, emergency preparedness drills, public relations, federal and state reporting, and records management.

ABILITY TO:Interpret policies, procedures and regulations, follow instructions, communicate effectively, prepare, maintain, and file accurate and concise reports, collect data, recognize individual differences, lift a moderate amount of weight, develop a rapport with students, staff, co-workers, administration and the public.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

OCCASIONAL: Exposure to inclement weather driving conditions and severe weather, traffic, loud noise, unruly children/adults; attends functions or performs duties outside normal working hours; exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. Light lifting, up to 50 pounds.

PERIODIC: Exposure to inclement weather driving conditions and severe weather, heavy equipment, unruly children/adults; exposure to common childhood illnesses.

FREQUENT: Exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. Prolonged periods of standing and lifting (10-20 pounds). Bending, stooping and reaching.
