Job summary

Salem City Public Schools is seeking a Long Term Substitute for Elementary Education for the 2026-2027 school year. The candidate must hold a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Elementary Education. This is an exempt, full-time position and the salary covers all hours worked.

Position open until filled. The substitute will develop lesson plans, implement instructional activities, assess student progress, and collaborate with school staff to support student learning.

Qualifications

  • Virginia teaching license with endorsement in Elementary Education required.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university holding an appropriate Virginia teaching license.
  • Ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior and effective classroom management.

Responsibilities

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences.
  • Instructs students in subject matter specified in state law and school district procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behavior.
  • Adapts teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments.
  • Communicates with students, parents, and counselors through conferences and other means.
  • Evaluates students' progress and maintains records.

Job Description

SALEM CITY SCHOOLS IS SEARCHING FOR A LONG TERM SUBSTITUTE FOR THE 2026-2027 SCHOOL YEAR AND BEGINS IMMEDIATELY. APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS A VIRGINIA TEACHING LICENSE WITH AN ENDORSEMENT IN ELEMENTARY EDUCATION.

TEACHER

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs difficult professional work providing teaching services in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, assisting students to develop knowledge as a foundation for future learning in accordance with each student’s ability, motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required.Work is performed under the regular supervision of the school principal.This is an exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.Employees holding exempt positions often are required to follow a flexible work schedule, which may include working extended hours to meet specific job responsibilities.The contracted salary covers all hours worked.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.Some teaching specialties (i.e. music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision, physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Establishing a flexible school instructional program and class environment favorable to learning; teaching a broad range of subjects or specialized subject matter(s), motivating students to achieve maximum potential.The teacher also…..

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials;
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences;
  • Integrates subject area content and technology;
  • Instructs students in subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district;
  • Establishes and maintains standards of behavior;
  • Adapts teaching materials and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge students;
  • Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions;
  • Encourages students to think independently, develop and express original ideas;
  • Evaluates students' progress, maintains appropriate records, prepares progress reports;
  • Communicates with students, student counselors and parents through conferences and other means;
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional books and instructional materials;
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials;
  • Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required;
  • Attends Parent Teacher Association meetings;
  • Identifies student needs; assists with assessment of needs;
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with established procedures;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university holding an appropriate Virginia teaching license.
