Mentor Local School District has a vacancy for a long term substitute to serve as a Speech and Language Pathologist for the second semester of the 2026-27 school district (January 2027- May 2027)

Job Objective

Facilitate the identification and remediation of communication disorders to help students achieve maximum benefit from the educational program and parental involvement.

Essential Functions

The following are typical work responsibilities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a qualified individual with a disability to perform essential functions.

  • Consult with staff to identify ongoing/emerging speech/language needs of students.
  • Monitor education laws, rules, and regulations. Help ensure that program policies/procedures support non-biased assessment/planning activities. Facilitate compliance with legal mandates.
  • Prepare the assigned assessment/consultation/treatment area. Requisition supplies.
  • Obtain informed consent before providing services. Administer diagnostic tests and interpret results.
  • Provide recommendations that facilitate student participation in appropriate learning activities. Help the family/student understand how services relate to the educational program.
  • Develop and implement protocols to safeguard student assessment results that are shared with staff and/or referral sources. Ensure that confidential materials are stored appropriately.
  • Perform screening activities (e.g., child find, new students, grades designated by the board, etc.).
  • Perform follow-up activities with students who have not passed earlier screening procedures.
  • Develop a service schedule. Provide consultation and therapeutic intervention services.
  • Use a variety of service delivery models to treat and/or address speech/language disorders (e.g.,
  • verbal/written language, voice, articulation, fluency, interactive communication, auditory and/or visual processing, cognition/communication, etc.). Monitor the efficacy of interventions.
  • Provide information about techniques to help families assist the student with activities at home.
  • Teach skills that help students manage the learning environment (e.g., assistive technology, augmentative devices, use of instructional/media resources, access/proximity to activities, etc.).
  • Comply with federal/state policies/procedures for the education of students identified as having a disability.
  • Prepare and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEP). Work with staff to help ensure that services are provided in the least restrictive educational environment.
  • Serve as a resource to classroom teachers. Help staff resolve problems that impede student participation in appropriate learning activities/environments.
  • Facilitate opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in an inclusive educational environment. Implement behavior management and/or prescribed medical plans when required.
  • Document student progress. Ensure the accuracy of records. Prepare end-of-the-year recommendations for each student served.
  • Consult with parents as needed (e.g., phone calls, e-mail, written notes, meetings, etc.).
  • Communicate expectations, provide guidance, and show an active interest in student progress. Help parents/students understand program objectives and performance standards.
  • Encourage self-reliance, problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, and performance skills.
  • Help facilitate community participation in activities that enhance student learning.
  • Maintain a positive learning environment. Facilitate student learning activities that encourage collaboration and positive peer relationships.
  • Collaborate with other staff. Share knowledge and resources that enhance student learning.
  • Consult with support personnel and families to address student concerns (e.g., academic difficulties, excessive absences, behavior mental/physical health, family/peer relations, etc.).
  • Perform other specific job-related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, college education or degree, certification endorsement.
  • Maintain a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
  • Participate (and pass where applicable) in all required training, including but not limited to: Vehicle Safety, First Aid, CPR, Crisis Intervention, Blood Borne Pathogens, and others deemed appropriate for the position.
  • Comply with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.
  • Embody high ethical standards and integrity. Accept responsibility for decisions and conduct.
  • Adhere to Educational Service Center (ESC) Governing Board policies/administrative guidelines/staff handbook, policies of the assigned worksite, and to the Licensure Code of Professional Conduct for Ohio Educators.
  • Secure and maintain appropriate licensures required.
  • Promote the proper use, care, and security of Educational Service Center (ESC) property. Report misconduct, vandalism, equipment malfunctions, and other concerns.
  • Advance the professional image of the service center and affiliated school districts.
  • Establish professional relationships with coworkers and function as a part of a cohesive team.
  • Commitment to keep current with workplace innovations that enhance personal productivity.
  • Exhibit consistent, impartial, and resourceful critical‑thinking skills.
  • Proficient in office protocols, data entry, spelling, proofreading, and the correct use of grammar.

  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions and temperature extremes.
  • Balancing, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and standing.
  • Lifting, carrying, and moving work‑related supplies and/or equipment.
  • Must have the ability to occasionally move up to 50 lbs.
  • Operate and/or ride in a vehicle.
  • Work at various heights, in confined spaces, and/or invariable/diminished lighting.
  • Work in proximity to moving mechanical parts.
  • Report misconduct or violations of policy and procedures to the direct supervisor and/or another administrator.
