The Skilled Nursing Facility Administrator is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and day-to-day operation of the skilled nursing facility. The Administrator provides leadership to ensure high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, operational excellence, employee engagement, financial stewardship, and a positive resident and family experience.

The Administrator maintains overall administrative accountability for facility operations and works collaboratively with Nursing, Medical Services, Social Work, Rehabilitation, Admissions, Human Resources, Finance, Dining Services, Environmental Services, Plant Operations, and other departments to ensure coordinated delivery of services.

The position requires a Nursing Home Administrator license consistent with Connecticut requirements. Connecticut law requires nursing homes to be under the supervision of a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and defines that Administrator as the person in general administrative charge of the nursing home.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership & Facility Operations

  • Provide overall leadership and administrative direction for the skilled nursing facility.
  • Establish clear operational expectations and promote accountability among department leaders.
  • Coordinate facility operations across clinical and non-clinical departments.
  • Maintain a visible leadership presence throughout the facility and routinely engage with residents, families, employees, and department leaders.
  • Ensure appropriate systems, policies, procedures, and management practices are in place to support safe and effective facility operations.
  • Lead management meetings and establish mechanisms for monitoring operational performance.
  • Promote a culture focused on resident-centered care, service excellence, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Quality of Care & Resident Experience

  • Partner closely with the Director of Nursing and clinical leadership to support high-quality resident care and services.
  • Monitor quality indicators, resident outcomes, complaints, grievances, incidents, hospital transfers, rehospitalizations, falls, infections, pressure injuries, and other key clinical and operational measures.
  • Support Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities and ensure identified concerns are addressed through appropriate corrective action and follow-up.
  • Promote resident dignity, choice, independence, privacy, and quality of life.
  • Maintain effective processes for addressing resident and family concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Participate in resident and family meetings as appropriate.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain facility operations in accordance with applicable federal and Connecticut requirements governing skilled nursing facilities.
  • Maintain the Connecticut Nursing Home Administrator license required for the position. Connecticut establishes specific education, training, examination, and licensure requirements for Nursing Home Administrators.
  • Provide leadership during regulatory surveys and other governmental or accreditation reviews.
  • Coordinate development, implementation, and monitoring of plans of correction when deficiencies are identified.
  • Ensure appropriate investigation and reporting of incidents and other reportable events in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical leadership to maintain compliance with resident rights and standards governing resident care.
  • Provide leadership for development and management of the facility's operating budget.
  • Monitor revenue, expenses, labor utilization, overtime, agency utilization, supplies, purchased services, and other significant operating expenses.
  • Review financial performance regularly and develop corrective plans when performance varies materially from budget.
  • Promote financially responsible decision-making while maintaining appropriate standards of resident care and service.
  • Partner with Finance and Revenue Cycle teams to monitor census, payer mix, accounts receivable, reimbursement, and financial performance.

Workforce Management

  • Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and accountability to facility department heads.
  • Partner with Human Resources and department leaders on recruitment, retention, employee relations, performance management, and workforce planning.
  • Monitor staffing levels and workforce metrics including vacancies, turnover, overtime, absenteeism, and agency utilization.
  • Promote employee engagement, effective communication, teamwork, and leadership development.
  • Ensure leaders appropriately address employee performance and workplace concerns.
  • Build a culture in which employees understand their roles in delivering safe, compassionate, resident-centered care.

Census, Admissions & Business Development

  • Monitor census, admissions, discharges, hospital referrals, payer mix, and other relevant business-development indicators.
  • Partner with Admissions and clinical leadership to evaluate prospective admissions based upon the facility's capabilities and available resources.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with hospitals, physicians, accountable care organizations, referral sources, community organizations, residents, and families.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen census and the facility's position within the local healthcare continuum.
  • Provide administrative oversight of facility safety and emergency-preparedness programs.
  • Ensure leadership teams are prepared to respond appropriately to emergencies and disruptions in operations.
  • Support an environment designed to protect the health and safety of residents, employees, visitors, and others within the facility.
  • Work with appropriate departments to monitor environmental, life-safety, maintenance, and emergency-preparedness issues.

Resident & Family Relations

  • Establish a culture of responsiveness to residents and families.
  • Routinely interact with residents and families to identify concerns and opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure complaints and grievances are investigated, addressed, documented, and followed through appropriately.
  • Support resident and family councils and incorporate relevant feedback into facility improvement efforts.

Performance Improvement

  • Use clinical, financial, workforce, satisfaction, and operational data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Establish measurable goals for department leaders and monitor progress.
  • Lead corrective-action initiatives when performance falls below established expectations.
  • Promote interdisciplinary problem-solving rather than department-specific solutions.
  • Ensure performance-improvement initiatives result in sustainable changes to operations.
