Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking a Mechanical Shop Laborer Trainee to learn locomotive service and shop operations through hands‑on training and structured classroom instruction. The role includes fueling, cleaning, sanding, washing locomotives, and operating forklifts while adhering to safety rules.

The program progresses with on‑the‑job experience, potential licensing through NS training, and travel for training as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Ability to pass pre‑employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass a post‑offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Fuel locomotives and check/replenish oil levels.
• Clean locomotive cabs and facilities.
• Sand and wash locomotives; operate forklifts and other equipment.
• May operate locomotives within shop limits; transport supplies between locations.
• Wear protective equipment and complete annual safety training.
