Job summary

Union Pacific Railroad in Melrose Park, IL seeks a Mechanical Service Operator to support locomotive operations by stocking materials, cleaning areas, and assisting in shop and service facilities. Learn the shop environment and Union Pacific's mechanical operations while contributing to uninterrupted service across North America.

You will operate locomotives between shop locations, use forklifts and other shop equipment, perform air brake tests, maintain safety, and collaborate with teammates.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18+.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Basic arithmetic and conversion of fractions and decimals.
• Capable of extracting information from tables, charts, and text.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• Experience using computers and keyboarding.
• Understand and follow safety rules and instructions.
• Basic mechanical knowledge to solve problems.
• Willing to work at locations you can live and work.
• Able to work around large equipment (railcars, locomotives, cranes).
• Willing to wear PPE as required.

Responsibilities

• Operate locomotives to transport them between shop locations and switching areas.
• Safely operate shop machines and tools (forklifts, backhoes, etc.).
• Ensure compliance with safety and operational regulations.
• Restock locomotives with materials and supplies.
• Clean locomotive interiors and exteriors.
• Conduct air brake tests and inspect equipment for hazards.
• Communicate with team using radios and signals.
• Take initiative and complete tasks to high standards.
• Prioritize safety and report hazards.
• Foster positive working relationships and support team success.
