Job summary

Union Pacific Railroad is seeking a Mechanical Service Operator to support locomotive operations by stocking materials and maintaining shop cleanliness. You will gain a holistic understanding of mechanical operations across the shop, contributing to uninterrupted service for customers.

The role emphasizes safety, teamwork, and hands-on work with rail equipment, cranes, and various shop machinery. Applicants must be able to pass an English assessment and meet physical requirements.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18+.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Ability to work independently or in a team.
• Basic arithmetic including fractions/decimals.
• Ability to read and extract data from charts and text.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• Computer use and keyboarding skills.
• Understand safety rules and procedures.
• Follow operating and safety bulletins and legal documents.
• Willing to work at Union Pacific locations.

Responsibilities

• Operate locomotives to move them between shop locations and service areas.
• Use forklifts, backhoes, bobcats, cranes, and steam cleaners safely.
• Restock locomotives with water, sand, and spare parts.
• Clean locomotive interiors and exteriors for safety and appearance.
• Conduct air brake tests and inspect equipment for defects.
• Communicate with team using radios and signals.
• Contribute to safety and high-quality task completion.
• Fulfill additional duties as assigned.
