Job summary

King County is seeking a journey-level Carpenter I to support locksmith duties across Facilities Management Division buildings. The role installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs mechanical and electronic locking systems and door hardware, with emphasis on key-control and security hardware.

The ideal candidate has apprenticeship or two years of journey-level carpentry, strong mechanical aptitude, and excellent customer service.

Qualifications

• Completion of a verifiable apprenticeship or two years+ of journey-level carpenter experience.
• Knowledge of construction terminology, basic mathematics, safe work practices.
• Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems and determine repairs.
• Clear communication, written and oral.
• Ability to work independently and with others.
• Ability to document work using computers and mobile devices.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial locks, lock mechanisms, cylinders, cores, door closers, exit devices, and hardware.
• Rekey locks and work with mechanical and electronic keying systems.
• Support key-control processes including issuance, distribution, tracking, and recordkeeping.
• Install/modify doors and frames for lock installations.
• Troubleshoot door-locking system problems and determine repairs or replacements.
• Use computer-based systems to document work and maintain records.
• Perform locksmith work in detention and secure facilities.
• Coordinate with electricians, security staff, and other trades as needed.
