Job summary

Thompson Coburn LLP in Washington, D.C. is seeking a Lobbying and Policy Intern for a non-exempt, temporary fall position in our Washington D.C. office.

Under the Legislative Director, the intern will provide administrative and legislative assistance to our bipartisan federal lobbying and government affairs practice, gaining hands-on policy, research and advocacy experience. Preferred applicants will have excellent research and writing skills and prior Capitol Hill or government relations

Qualifications

  • 30 hours per week for ~12 weeks
  • Strong professionalism and discretion in handling information
  • Fluent English with proper grammar and diction
  • Attention to detail and time management skills
  • Capitol Hill or government relations experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Monitor Congress and track legislative activity; draft write-ups of briefings and hearings
  • Prepare and draft reports on Congressional and federal regulatory activity
  • Conduct research using Bloomberg Government, Congress.gov, and other databases
  • Prepare internal and external correspondence and other administrative duties

Job description

Thompson Coburn, a large full-service law firm with offices in eight (8) cities across the U.S., is in search of a Lobbying and Policy Intern to fill a non-exempt, temporary fall position in its Washington D.C. office. Under the direction of the Firm's Legislative Director, the Lobbying and Policy Intern will provide administrative and legislative assistance to our growing Lobbying and Policy practice group. This role offers hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development within a bipartisan federal lobbying and government affairs practice, helping participants build practical policy, research, and advocacy skills. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the federal policymaking process and the diverse stakeholders involved in shaping public policy. Preferred applicants will have excellent research and writing skills, and previous experience working in the field of government relations and/or working on Capitol Hill.

Job Responsibilities
  • Monitor the US Congress, which would include tracking legislative activity and drafting write-ups of Congressional briefings, hearings, and markups.
  • Prepare and draft reports on Congressional and federal regulatory activity.
  • Conduct research using Bloomberg Government, Congress.gov, and other research databases.
  • Prepare internal and external correspondence and other administrative duties as requested.
Job Requirements
  • Ability to work approximately 30 hours a week for approximately 12 weeks.
  • Must possess a high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills so as to be able to work well with employees at all levels within the organization and maintain all information in the strictest of confidence. Required to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with others.
  • Must have ability to read, write and communicate fluent English; ability to compose documents in the appropriate business style using correct grammar and spelling; ability to communicate clearly using proper grammar and diction over the telephone.
  • Must possess attention to detail, ability to balance multiple projects and have strong time management skills.
  • Must have ability to reason and apply common-sense understanding to situations encountered.
  • Ability to process routine daily functions while being able to resolve sensitive issues and complex assignments utilizing above average critical thinking skills.
  • The physical demands of this position are representative of those that must be met by an employee in order for them to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. These include being both mobile and stationary throughout the work day, and having the ability to transport 20 pounds and being able to operate a computer and other business equipment found in the office.
Education And Experience Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Previous experience on Capitol Hill and/or in government relations firm preferred.
Compensation

For applicants that meet the experience requirements for the role and are physically based in Washington D.C., the expected salary is $20.00 per hour upon commencement of employment.
