Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of forklift experience with 8,000–20,000 lb capacity.
  • Minimum 6 months lumber yard experience.
  • Forklift certification within first 3 months of employment.
  • Experience in construction, lumber, warehouse operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of lumber and building materials preferred.
  • Experience operating woodworking equipment, saws, and hand tools.
  • Ability to read a tape measure and do basic math.
  • Strong attention to detail and order accuracy.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.

  • Excellent communication and customer service.
  • Basic computer skills a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide friendly, knowledgeable assistance to customers in the lumber yard and warehouse.
  • Verify loads and tickets to ensure correct products and quantities.
  • Safely pull, build, load, and unload orders of lumber and materials.
  • Organize and stage orders with Yard Manager and Dispatcher.
  • Load materials onto trailers and delivery vehicles.
  • Cut lumber to requested sizes using approved saws.
  • Monitor inventory and communicate replenishment needs.
  • Receive, unload, and store incoming lumber and materials.
  • Assist with inventory counts and warehouse housekeeping.
  • Operate forklifts, banding, saws, and related equipment.
  • Maintain safe, clean yard and warehouse spaces.
  • Assist with occasional deliveries of oversized loads.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, drivers, and customers.
  • Follow all safety standards and company policies.

Job Description

We are seeking a dependable, hardworking, and customer-focused Load Builder/Lumber Yard Associate to join our team. This is a physically active, primarily outdoor position that plays an important role in providing excellent service to our customers and keeping our lumber yard operating safely and efficiently.

In this position, you will assist customers with locating and loading lumber and building materials, prepare and verify orders for delivery or pickup, operate forklifts and other equipment, receive incoming materials, and help maintain a clean, safe, and organized lumber yard and warehouse.

This position requires someone who enjoys staying active, working as part of a team, and providing great customer service in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide friendly, knowledgeable assistance to customers in the lumber yard and warehouse.
  • Answer customer questions, identify products, and direct customers to the appropriate lumber and building materials.
  • Verify load and pick tickets to ensure customers receive the correct products and quantities.
  • Safely and efficiently pull, build, load, and unload orders of lumber and building materials.
  • Organize and stage orders in coordination with the Yard Manager and Dispatcher to ensure loads are prepared and ready for drivers.
  • Load lumber and building materials onto semi-trailers, flatbeds, delivery trucks, and customer vehicles.
  • Cut lumber to requested sizes using approved saws and equipment.
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate replenishment needs, shortages, and damaged materials to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Receive, unload, organize, and properly store incoming lumber, building materials, commodities, and warehouse products.
  • Assist with inventory counts and inventory‑control activities.
  • Safely operate forklifts, banding equipment, saws, and other yard and warehouse equipment.
  • Keep staging areas, loading areas, lumber aisles, and warehouse spaces clean, organized, and free of hazards.
  • Regularly empty trash receptacles and assist with general yard and warehouse housekeeping.
  • Occasionally assist with deliveries involving oversized or difficult loads.
  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, drivers, supervisors, management, and customers regarding orders, inventory, and operational needs.
  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Minimum 2 years of experience operating 8,000–20,000 lb. forklifts.
  • Minimum 6 months of lumber yard experience.
  • Forklift certification must be obtained within the first three months of employment and maintained throughout employment in this position.
  • Previous experience in construction, lumber and building materials, warehouse operations, or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of lumber and building materials strongly preferred.
  • Experience safely operating woodworking equipment, saws, and hand tools.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure and perform basic math calculations.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to order accuracy.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established procedures.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic computer skills are a plus.
  • Commitment to following all company safety standards and procedures.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This is a physically demanding position performed primarily in a lumber yard and warehouse environment.

  • Ability to regularly lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
  • Ability to spend extended periods standing and walking.
  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop, reach, climb, push, pull, and perform other physical activities associated with handling lumber and building materials.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment and work around moving vehicles and machinery.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other seasonal or inclement weather.
